of calls received by the tower.

between 2 and 5 km from the tower?

was defective?

5. A company producing electric relays has three manufacturing plants producing 50, 30, and 20
percent, respectively, of its product. Suppose that the probabilities that a relay manufactured by
these plants is defective are 0.02, 0.05, and 0.01, respectively.

is defective?
b) If a relay selected at random is found to be defective, what is the probability that it was
manufactured by plant 2?
6. Four computer companies A, B, C, D supply microprocessors to a company. From previous
experience it is known that the probability of the processor being bad if it comes from A is 4%, B is
2%, C is 5%, and D is 1%. The probability of picking supplier A is 20%, B is 30%, C is 10%, and
D is 40%. Find the probability that a processor chosen at random is bad.
7. Consider the binary communication channel shown in Fig. 2. The channel input symbol X may
assume the state 0 or the state 1, and, similarly, the channel output symbol Y may assume either the
state 0 or the state 1. Because of the channel noise, an input 0 may convert to an output 1 and vice
versa. The channel is characterized by the channel transition probabilities p0, q0, P1, and q1, defined
by:
p0=P(y1/x0) and p1=P(y0/x1)
q0=P(y0/x0) and q1=P(y1/x1)
Where x0 and x1 denote the events (X = 0) and (X = I), respectively, and y0 and y1 denote the
events (Y = 0) and (Y = 1), respectively. Note that p 0+ q0 = 1 = p1 + q1. Let
P(x0) = 0.5, p0 =0.1, and p1 = 0.2.
a) Find P(yo) and P(yl).
b) If a 0 was observed at the output, what is the probability that a 0 was the input state?
c) If a 1 was observed at the output, what is the probability that a 1 was the input state?
d) Calculate the probability of error Pe.

8. Consider the communication channel shown in Fig-3. The symbols transmitted are 0 and However,
three possible symbols can be received: 0, 1, and E. Thus, we define the input symbol set as
X= {0, 1} and the output symbol set as Y= {0, 1, E}. The transition (or conditional) probability
P[Y|X] is the probability that Y is received, given that X was transmitted. In particular, P[0|0] = 0.8,
P[1|0] = 0.1 and P[E|0] = 0.1. Similarly, P[0|1] = 0.2, P[1|1] = 0.7 and P[E|1] = 0.1. If P[X= 0] =
P[X=1] = 0.5, determine the following:
a. P[Y= 0], P[Y= 1] and P[Y= E]
b. If 0 is received, what is the probability that 0 was transmitted?
c. If E is received, what is the probability that 1 was transmitted?
d. If 1 is received, what is the probability that 1 was transmitted?

9. A communication receiver sends numbers 1, 2, 3. As a result of inherent noise in the channel, the
conditional probabilities of receiving 1,2,3 under the condition that 1,2,3 were sent are shown in
Fig.4. A priori probabilities are: P(1S) = 0.2, P(2S) = 0.4, P(3S) = 0.4
(a) What is the probability that 2 was received at receiver?
(b) Find P(1S 2R), P(2S |2R) & P(3S|2R).
