The Kailasa temple (Cave 16) is the largest of the 34 Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cave temples and
monasteries known collectively as the Ellora Caves, ranging for over two kilometers along the sloping basalt
cliff at the site. This temple was built by Krishna I, a Rashtrakuta King in 760 CE. The temple is located in the
Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.
Usually, buildings are built from foundation reaching top of the structure. But this temple is
constructed from top to bottom. A megalith carved from a cliff face, it is considered one of the most
remarkable cave temples in the world because of its size, architecture, and sculptural treatment. It has been
called "the climax of the rock-cut phase of Indian architecture".
This temple is one of the greatest Indian architectural wonders. There are so many interesting things
about the construction of this two-storeyed temple. It is treated as the greatest monolith structure in the
world. The whole temple is cut from an existing single rock hill. Some three million cubic feet of rock seem
3
to have been chiselled out so that the great pit was formed. The temple is carved from top and the unwanted
rocks are removed. Every part of the big temple belongs to the same rock. One more strange thing observed
about this temple's construction is that, the remains of the cut-out rocks are found nowhere nearby.
In and around this temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, profuse ornamentation, wonderful composition
can be observed. It is a gigantic sculptural piece of art. There are two artistic pillars in the pavilion which is
the abode of Nandi. Reserve Bank of India has given a tribute to this wonderful temple. On the reverse side
of the INR 20 currency note, there's a striking image of the pillar from the Kailash Temple. Introduced in 2019,
this currency note draws attention to the Ellora Caves.
According to pseudoscience books, there are countless hidden passageways beneath places like Ellora
that once housed energy machines and other ancient technology. It is said these extraterrestrial machines
may have been used to build the enormous temple of Kailasa.
a. Where is the Kailasa temple situated?
