CURRENT TRANSFORMERS
0 GENERAL

These Specification cover the requirements for design, manufacture and testing of 500 kV
& 220 kV current transformers.

The current transformers shall be single pole, freestanding, hermetically sealed, oil filled,
self contained, outdoors type. These shall be supplied complete with oil level indicators,
steel support structures, solder less clamp type HV connectors for connection to conductor
and/or aluminum tube, terminal boxes with terminals for outgoing secondary wires,
grounding terminals and marshalling boxes as specified. The oil conform to latest issue of
relevant IEC Publication.

The current transformers shall be multiple ratio type with 5 cores each for 500kV and

220kV.

The current transformers shall be designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with

the latest issue of relevant IEC Publications and particulars listed herein which shall be
taken as the minimum requirements. Upward revision of any of the parameter found

necessary at the time of detailed engineering by the contractor and development of current
transformer performance characteristics shall be made while finalizing the design of the

current transformers without any additional cost.

02. ACCURACY CLASSIFICATION

The accuracy classification given in Clause 12.02 shall be achieved without secondary turn
compensation.

The protection cores of the current transformers to be supplied under this contact shall
meet the requirements of 5P20 accuracy class for 500kV & 220kV and specified at the
lowest tap. In addition to this, the protection cores shall fulfill the transient dimensioning
requirements of IEC 44-6 for TPS class current transformers.

3. CONSTRUCTION

3.1 GENERAL

The current transformers shall be constructed to provide adequate insulation for the
insulation class specified and to withstand mechanical and thermal stresses produced under
short circuit conditions. All insulation and magnetic materials shall have proven and well
established physical and electrical properties such as to give continuous and prolonged
service without deterioration.

The current transformers shall be hermatically sealed with the arrangement other than
nitrogen gas custions such as synthetic or stainless steel bellows or expandable cells to
accommodate oil level variation. Suitable grade of stainless steel be used if steel bellows
are provided with the provision f suitable device for indicating the position of bellows.

3.2 Secondary Terminal and Terminal Boxes

The secondary leads shall be brought out through the current transformer tank wall by

means of multiple bushings, equipped with connectors for .5 sq.mm to 10 sq.mm stranded

copper conductor and shall terminate in a low voltage weather proof box mounted on the
side of the tank. The nameplate shall be fixed at the outside of the terminal box to be

visible with the box closed. Connection diagram shall be affixed inside the secondary
terminal box so that it can be easily read while working in the box.

3.3 Core and Windings:

The cores shall be made of high quality non-aging grain oriented silicon steel, carefully
selected, tested and annealed to provide the best magnetic characteristics.

The cores and windings structure shall be rigidly braced and clamped to sustain given
mechanical short time rating. The design of cores and windings shall be such as to ensure

high accuracy, uniform impulse distribution throughout the winding and low leakage

reactance. Each secondary winding shall be wound on a separate core.

3.4 H.V. Bushings:

The current transformers shall be equipped with H.V. bushing of an insulation class not
less than that of winding terminal to which they are connected and of creepage distance as
specified in Section 12.2.

The bushings shall be manufactured from wet type porcelain and suitable for continuous
outdoor service. The bushings shall be so constructed as to produce a uniform electrical
stress distribution throughout, contain no voids, and be leak proof at all temperatures.
Provisions shall be available for power factor testing of each bushing. Each current
transformer shall be equipped with bellows position indicator readable from ground level.

3.4.1 Tank

The tank shall be constructed of corrosion proof, high quality cavity free cast aluminum
alloy and shall be suitably reinforced to withstand handling and excessive pressure under
fault conditions without distortion. All welded joints pipe work and valves etc. shall be oil
leak tested. A clamp on cover shall preferably be provided to allow access to component
parts within the tank without undue difficulty. Grounding lugs complete with connectors
suitable for 185 Sq. mm stranded copper conductor shall be provided.

3.4.2 Accessories

The current transformers shall be provided with the following accessories:

3.5 Marshalling Boxes

A marshalling box shall be mounted on centre phase structure with terminals to terminate

all phase cores of a set of three single phase CTs Self-shorting and isolating type terminals
shall be provided for CT secondary circuits. These boxes shall be fabricated from sheet

steel not less than MSG 3mm thick, seam welded at corners. However, in case of type
tested rigid frame design, the thickness of steel sheets may be reduced according to

manufacture’s standard design. At least 20% spare terminals shall be required. These boxes

shall be designed for protection class IP54. Gland plates shall be provided for proper
termination of cables.

Heaters with thermostat and humidistat shall be provided inside each marshalling box
Lamps with door operated switch shall be provided for internal illumination. There shall be

a single-phase power socket inside each marshalling box. An MCB with auxiliary contact

shall be provided for switching ON/OFF the AC power supply to the heating, illumination
and power socket. The MCB shall also be equipped with sensitive earth fault protection for
personnel safety.

Each star-point of the CT circuit shall be separately grounded through isolating type
terminals to enable convenient verification of single point grounding of the interconnected
CT circuit.

3.6 Terminal Marking

The terminal markings for the current transformers shall be in accordance with relevant
IEC Publication, and shall clearly identify the secondary terminals corresponding to each
specified current ratio.

3.7 Name Plate

The rating nameplate markings shall be of permanent nature and shall be in accordance
with latest issue of relevant IEC Publication. In addition to the data mentioned in IEC,
knee point voltage, magnetizing current and secondary winding resistance at specified
temperature of each core at each tap shall be engraved on the nameplate. Engraving shall
be white on a black background.

3.8 Warning

A permanent legible warning shall be placed inside the current transformer terminal box-
carrying wording “Caution Transformer never to be energized with secondary circuit
open.”

4. Tests

General:

The current transformers shall be subjected to tests in the factory and at Site in the

presence of the Engineer for conformity to the requirements of the Specifications.

Six (6) certified copies of the tests made, and of the results thereof, shall be furnished by
the Contractor to the Engineer for approval after the tests are made. The results of these

tests shall be in such form as to provide means of determining compliance with the
applicable Specifications for the material tested. If any item of the plant is of a new design

or if essential parts have been redesigned, additional test reports to verify this data shall be

submitted for the Engineer’s approval.

4.2 Type Tests:

The following type tests shall be made on a single CT of each type in accordnce with the

latest issue of relevant IEC Publications:-

(1) Short time current tests


(2) Temperature rise test
(3) Lightning and switching impulse voltage tests on primary windngs.
(4) Determination of errors of protective and metering cores.
(5) Wet test for outdoor type transformers.
(6) Chopped lightning impulse test.
(7) Measurement of capacitance and dielectric dissipation factor
(8) Measuring chopped impulse test on primary winding.
(9) Mechanical tests
(10) Radio interference voltage measurement (RIV) test.

Type test reports from independent laboratory on similar units may be submitted in lieu of
performing the test for Engineer’s approval. In the event of the Contractor’s supplying

certified copies of type test reports from independent laboratory covering equipment of
similar design, rating and construction, the Engineer may waive such tests.

4.3 Routine Tests:

The following routine tests shall be made on all CTs in accordance with the latest issue of
relevant IEC Publications, for all ratios and at all taps:

(1) Verification of terminal markings


(2) Power frequency withstand test on primary windings
(3) Power frequency test on secondary windings, and between Sections.
(4) Inter-turn overvoltage tests
(5) Partial discharge measurement
(6) Determination of errors and accuracy of protective and measuring cores.

(7) Capacitance and dissipation factor test.
(8) Dissolved gas analyses and measurement of moisture content of oil .

(9) Magnetizing characteristics verifications at each tap of each core.
(10) Measurement of winding resistance of each tap of each core.

5. Drawings and Descriptive Data

5.1 Tender Drawings and Data

In addition to descriptive data mentioned in Schedule E to Bid, the Contractor shall furnish
following information:-

(1) Drawing showing outline dimensions, construction and installation details of the
current transformers.

(2) Manufacturing manuals for inspection, assembly, installation, testing,

commissioning, oil sampling, dissolved gas analysis and measurement of moisture


content of oil, maintenance.

(3) Reference data for moisture content and dissolved gases of oil.

(4) Current error and phase displacement data/curve for variation of 5% to 120% in
rated current for measuring cores.
(5) Composite error data/curve for current ranging from rated primary to rated
accuracy limit primary current for protective cores.
(6) Excitation curves for each of the protective and measuring cores t each tap.
(7) Resistance and leakage reactance of the secondary winding at each tap for
protective and measuring cores.
(8) Type test reports form independent and internationally recognized laboratory of
exactly similar type of current transformers will be acceptable.

5.2 Approval Drawings and Data:

Drawings and data to be submitted for review and approval shall include those in Clause
12.10.1 as well as test reports, instruction manuals, schematic and panel wiring diagrams,

interconnection diagram, nameplates, drawings, and other relevant drawings data required
for proper installation, operation and maintenance of the current transformers. The
Contractor shall prepare and submit for engineer’s review and approval detailed current
transformer performance calculations to establish that the CT design parameters and
characteristics are suitable for the present and future requirements of protection and
metering systems. Upward revision in any of the parameters found necessary from the
results of the performance calculations shall be incorporated in the final design of the
current transformers without any additional cost to NTDC.
