Patterns of the Past: Pottery in the Indus valley

Civilization

Pottery is one of the oldest cultures in the history of humankind as it

carved a niche for itself as a form of art as well as practical as a tool
in society. This design possesses deep historical and cultural
presence of pottery and its notable role development of civilizations,
being a source of culture, economy and art of the people who
created it.

There is a logical way in which one can explain such higged factors
because in ancient societies, pottery had a cultural and practical
use. The ancients had pots for water and grains storage among
other basic needs and this was a necessity for farmers. Furthermore,
pots offered to idols and other ceremonial items were also made of
clay. In addition to these religious uses, pots were adorned as
articles of beauty that reflected the ideas, religion, and beauty of
the time. Various gaily colored details and figurines which
ornamented the pots conveyed the aliveness of the objects and
nature retold their customers about something sacred or magical.

On many samplers of the pots decoration it was possible to see

zigzag lines which are placed between two horizontal lines, and
might contain some profound meaning: as sinews or energy strokes
zigzags inflections of the line are inseparably connected with water
in the minds of many ancients.
The color palette of the piece also deserves attention. The warm,
earthy tones of the pottery, primarily shades of ochre and
brown, mirror the natural materials used in its creation. The dark
pigment used for the patterns contrasts sharply with the clay’s
surface, ensuring visibility and enhancing the decorative appeal.
