ACTIVITY/ASSIGNMENT
1. Balance the following equations:
a) PCl5 (s) + H2O (l) POCl3 (l) + HCl (aq) : PCl5 (s) + H2O (l) POCl3 (l) + 2HCl (aq)
b) Cu(s) + HNO3(aq) Cu(NO3)2(aq) + H2O(l) + NO(g) : 3Cu(s) + 8HNO3(aq) 3Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 4H2O(l)+2NO(g)
c) H2 (g) + I2 (s) HI (s) : H2 (g) + I2 (s) 2HI (s)

2. Complete and balance the following acid-base equations:

a) A solution of HClO4 is added to a solution of LiOH. : HClO4 (aq) + LiOH (aq) LiClO4 (aq) + H2O (l)
b) Aqueous H2SO4 reacts with NaOH. : H2SO4 (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) Na2SO4 (aq) + 2H2O (l)
c) Ba(OH)2 reacts with HF gas. : 2HF (aq) + Ba(OH)2 (aq) BaF2 (aq) + 2H2O (l)

3. Complete and balance the equations of the following reactions, each of which could be used to remove hydrogen sulfide
from natural gas:
a) Ca(OH)2 (s) + H2S (g) : Ca(OH)2 (s) + H2S (g) CaS (s) + 2H2O (l)
b) Na2CO3 (aq) + H2S (g) : Na2CO3 (aq) + H2S (g) Na2S (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

4. What mass of silver oxide, Ag2O, is required to produce 25.0 g of silver sulfadiazine, AgC10H9N4SO2,
from the reaction of silver oxide and sulfadiazine?
Balanced Equation : 2C10H10N4SO2 + Ag2O 2AgC10H9N4SO2 + H2O

Given: 25.0g of silver sulfadiazine (AgC10H9N4SO2)

Required: mass of silver oxide (Ag2O)

Molar Mass of silver sulfadiazine (AgC10H9N4SO2) = 357.14 g/mol

Molar Mass of silver oxide (Ag2O) = 231.735 g/mol
Mole Ratio of Ag2O : AgC10H9N4SO2 = 1:2

Solution:
Mass of Ag2O = given mass of AgC10H9N4SO2 x molar mass of AgC10H9N4SO2 x stoichiometric ratio Ag2O : AgC10H9N4SO2 x
molar mass Ag2O

= 8.11 g 𝐴𝑔2 𝑂
Answer: The mass of silver oxide (Ag2O) required is 8.11 g.

5. Automotive air bags inflate when a sample of sodium azide, NaN3, is very rapidly decomposed.
2NaN3 (s) 2Na (s) + 3N2
- What mass of sodium azide is required to produce 2.6 ft3 (73.6 L) of nitrogen gas with a density of 1.25 g/L
Given : The volume of nitrogen gas is 73.6 L.
The density of nitrogen gas is 1.25 g/L.

Molar mass of nitrogen (N2) = 28.014 g/mol

Molar mass of sodium azide (NaN3) = 65.0099 g/mol
Mole ratio NaN3:N2 = 2:3
Solution:

= 2.19 mol NaN3 = 142.37 g

Answer: The mass of sodium azide (NaN3) required is 142.37 g.
