GENERAL ADVICE

1. For most parts you start with an adjustable ring („magic ring“ or „magic loop“) and you’ll go on work in a
continuous spiral (except the pattern calls for a slst to close the round). This means, you continue to crochet
directly into the first stitch of the previous round to start the next round.

2. Stitch markers are your friends! Mark the first stitch of a round to keep track of where the round begins.
This helps when counting your stitches to compare with the pattern.

3. Take care to crochet very tight stitches! If you crochet rather loosely, choose a smaller hook size.

4. If the amigurumi will be given to a child under the age of 3 make sure that every piece is securely attached to
the body!

5. Most important: Have fun!

ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
-blo = work stitch as indicated through back loop only, example: sc-blo, dec-blo, inc-blo
ch = chain stitch
dc = double crochet stitches
dec = decrease (crochet together 2 sts with 1 sc) → tutorial A, page 4
-flo = work stitch as indicated through front loop only, example: sc-flo, dec-flo, inc-flo
hdc = half double crochet stitch
inc = increase (2 sc into the same stitch)
rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet stitch, x-shape → tutorial below
sk = skip stitch(es)
slst = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
°…° = work instructions between °...+...° all into the same stitch or same spot
[…] ...x = repeat instructions written in brackets as a sequence as often as given after the closing bracket,
example: [sc 1, inc] 5x
(…) = total number of sts at the end of a row or rnd

WHY USING THE X-SHAPED SINGLE CROCHET STITCH

I highly recommend to use the x-shape sc for this pattern! It creates tight stitches which are
standing much more on top of each other, compared to the standard v-shaped single crochet
stitch. Also the beginning of the rnds is shifting less.

X-SHAPE SINGLE CROCHET STITCH YARN-UNDER-SC, CROSS-STITCH-SC

Insert the hook into the indicated stitch. Don’t do yarn over now, but yarn under (!): Grab the yarn from above
with the hook pointing down, pull up a loop through the stitch. Then, finish like a common v-shape sc stitch:
Yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.

G JOINING YARN WITH A SLIP KNOT
01
Make a slip knot from your yarn (do not place on hook). Insert hook into
indicated stitch. Place the slip knot onto hook and pull the slip knot
through the stitch (→ photo 01). Take care to keep the knot on the back
of the fabric. Work into the next stitch, or make the number of chains as
indicated in the pattern (e.g., to start a new round).

Tip: You can also just insert the hook into indicated stitch, yo and pull it
through the stitch if you prefer (without making a slip knot).

H TWO THREADS FROM ONE SKEIN 02

To get 2 threads from the same ball of yarn you just have to find the
beginning of the yarn on the outside and the end of the yarn which is
hidden inside of the ball (center pull). Take both, the beginning and the
end and hold them together to crochet with 2 threads from one ball.

Tip: If you have to cut just one of the threads e.g. to replace it with
another color, always choose the yarn thread on the outside of the ball
to be cut and keep the center pull thread. Your ball will move less what
makes crocheting with 2 yarn balls much easier.

the 2 sts in the center of the body (→ photo 19).

Starting with the sts next to the marked sts, count 6 sts
to the left and 6 sts to the right. There have to be 12 sts in
between the eyes (→ photo 18).

Widen the two stitches with a chopstick, a pencil or a heavy

crochet hook. Then, take the eye layers with the 16 mm 20
eyes attached and push the shanks of the eyes through the
stitches (→ photo 19). push

Tip: Two layers of fabric may be too thick to attach the

washers of the eyes properly (with the flat side towards
the fabric). If so, turn the washer with the bumped side
towards the fabric (→ photo 20) and attach it this way.
Then, seal the back of the safety eyes with all purpose glue
or heat (→ tutorial F) so that they can’t come off.

Optionally: Use the ends of the white eye layer to sew the
layer onto the body with a few stitches before weaving in
the ends. 21

INSERTING THE MUSIC BOX

Note, that the pull cord does not come out of the music box
centred. There is a short and a long distance in front and
behind the pull cord. Place the music box into the body with
the short side being towards the eyes (→ photo 22).

Pull the cord of the music box through the stitch between 24
rnds 02 and 03 of the bottom base, which is next to where
the cord is coming out of the box. This stitch should be in
a line with the center of the body when looking at it from
the front (→ photos 23+24).

Pull the cord out of the music box as if you want to make
it play and run a stitch marker through the pull cord next
to the bottom of the squid to stop it from being pulled
back into the box (→ photo 25). Don’t remove the stitch
marker until the body is finally closed. It helps you to keep
the music box in place.
25
Now, stuff the space around the box evenly. Make sure to
stuff firmly, so that the soft stuffing is holding the box in
position well. Do not stuff the body below the box –
otherwise the stuffing could be pulled into the mechanism
and get stuck!

Stuff the rest of the body well and crochet on:

Now also stuff the first 2 dc-rnds of the body well but make
sure the dc stitches don’t stretch out too much.

Please note: A little stretch between the dc’s is welcome

because this is to make sure there’s enough stuffing to keep
the shrimp in shape later. So don’t worry about a bit of soft 4 cm / 1.6 inch

stuffing being visible between the dc stitches. You’ll pull

them closer together later with a round of slip stitches.

Take a short break to attach the shrimp to the pull cord of

the music box.

63

ATTACHING THE PULL CORD

circle

Make sure that you have removed the stitch marker that
was holding the pull cord back and the music box have
stopped playing!

Now, run the end of the pull cord through the space in
between the two double crochet stitches of the dc-decrease
at rnd 11 from outside to inside (→ photo 61).

Next, pull the salmon colored circle onto the cord too (→
photo 62). Push both, the shrimp and the circle, upwards
64
and make a big sturdy knot into the pull cord right below
the shrimp and the circle at a length of approx. 4 cm (1.6
inch) measured from the bottom of the squid (→ photo 62).

Now, push the knot and the circle inside the shrimp and
arrange the circle like a second layer under the dc stitches
of the body of the shrimp (→ photo 63).

Push the remaining tail of the pull cord into the body too
and stuff the body well.
