A-Contexte
Dans la plupart des société, la femme a toujours occupé une place d’infériorité par
rapport à l’homme dans toutes les instances de la vie ;mais de plus en plus de voix aussi bien
masculines que féminines prônent de nos jours la correction d’une telle méprise ou injustice.
B-Support
1- Women in India now participate in all activities such as education, sport, politics, media,
art and culture, service sectors, science and technology, etc. Indira Gandhi, who served
as prime Minister of India for an aggregate period of fifteen years is the world’s longest
serving woman prime Minister.
2- The Constitution of India guarantees to all India women equality (Article 14), no
discrimination by the State (Article 15), equality of opportunity (Article 16), equal pay
for equal work (Article 39). In addition, it allows special provisions to be made by the
state in favour of women and children (Article 15), renounces practices derogatory to
the dignity of women (Article 51) and also allows for provisions to be made by the State
for securing just and humane conditions of work and for maternity relief (Article 42).
3- Feminist activism in India picked up momentum during the late 1970s. One of the first
national level issues that brought the women’s groups together was the Mathura rape
case. The acquittal of policemen accused of raping a young girl, Mathura, in a police
station, led to a wide-scale protests in 1979-1980. The protests were widely covered in
the national media, and forced the Government to amend the Evidence Act, the Criminal
Procedure Code and the Indian Penal Code, and introduce the category of custodial rape.
Female activists united over issues such as female infanticide, gender bias, women’s
health, and female literacy.
4- Since alcoholism is often associated with violence against women in India, many
women’s group launched anti-liquor campaigns in Andhra Pradesh, Hunachal Pradesh,
Haryana, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and other States. Many Indian Muslim women have
questioned the fundamental leaders’ interpretation of women’s rights under the Shariat
law and have criticized the ‘’triple talaq system’’.
5- In the 1990s,grants from foreign donor agencies enabled the formation of new women-
oriented NGOs. Self-help groups NGOs such as Self-Employed women’s rights in India.
Many women have emerged as leaders of local movements.

6- In 2006, the case of a Muslim rape victim called Imrana was highlighted in the media.
Imrana was raped by her father-in-law. The pronouncement of some Muslim clerics that
Imrana should marry her father-in-law led to widespread pread protests and finally
Imrana’s father-in-law was given a prison term of ten years. The verdict was wrlcomed
many women’s group and the ‘’All India Muslim Personal Aw Board’’.
7- On March 9th ,2010, one day after the celebration of the International women’s Day,
Rajyasabha passed women’s Reservation Bill, ensuring 33% reservation to women in
Parliament and State legislative bodies.

How do you view women’s living condition in Benin today? Do you think that the
annual March 8th celebration of the women’s Day is sufficient to improve women’s
living conditions of Benin?
