PART 1: READING

The British Museum

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Our FAQ information is continually expanding. It contains answers written by curators in response to
questions already asked by visitors.

How can I access the Museum’s collection if I can’t visit in person?

There are several ways that you can access the British Museum’s collection from home or
abroad. The first is via our online collection database. This database contains images and
information on millions of objects in the collection. You can also request copies of material using
our online photo service. To request photos, search the online collection database and select the
item you are interested in. Click the “Request Photo” button to submit your request.

How can the British Museum help with my art history research?
Museum staff can assist visitors in using the Museum’s resources, but are unable to undertake
any research on behalf of visitors. You can also search our online research catalogue, which
includes articles and books published by Museum curators. We also offer free online courses on
various art history topics. Check the Museum’s website for course schedules.

Can the Museum provide information on the value of an item?

The Museum does not provide a valuation service for any type of item. Nor can we provide
valuation details for items held in the Museum’s collections. You can contact a registered
appraiser to get an expert valuation of an item. For books, you can check up-to-date information
on market values by using online second-hand book searches.
We hope that this information helps you find your way around the British Museum and make
optimum use of some of its resources.
