There was a poetry competition at our school last year. Anyone who was able to write a poem
could enter it. The first ten were to be printed in a booklet and the first-prize winner received five
thousand rupees and a framed certificate. I wanted to win that contest not for the prize money. I
wanted to be a writer.
I worked seven different poems and threw all of them away. None of them was good. And on
the last night, I wrote a poem that I knew was good. I knew it was the best writing I had ever done. I
called it ‘Mystery Train’ and entered in the contest.
On the day of the awards, before the winner was announced, the principal read the names of
the authors of the ten best poems. Mine was one of them. Then he announced the winner. First prize
to Hasitha for his poem titled ‘Memories’
When Hasitha’s name was called, he and his friends cheered. I just sat there stunned. I could
not believe it. Hasitha is not a sensitive boy who writes such poem. He is really rude and often bullies
kid. How can Hasitha who never write even a single line without copying from others, win ? I
wondered. I went home that day and wrote a poem about how much it hurt to lose the competition.
When I read the poem, I got the top of the world feeling again and I knew I would keep on writing.
During the holidays that followed, I borrowed a poetry book named ‘New poems’ from our
local library and I came across a poem called “Memories”. I thought Hasitha had the poem published.
But it was ‘Memories’ by Sanduni Gunathilaka. The poem was the same, the author was not. It was
published a month before the poetry competition.
Should I inform the principal and demand that the poems be judged again? Should I call
Hasitha and tell him I know he had cheated? That special moment of receiving the first prize was
over. But now I can write better poetry and I feel happy after reading them. But I wonder whether
Hasitha gets that happy feeling after reading his own poem. I am sure he will never feel the way I do.
