The fact that superior service can generate a competitive advantage for a company
does not mean that every attempt at improving service will create such an
advantage. Investments in service, like those in production and distribution, must be
balanced against other types of investments on the basis of direct, tangible benefits
such as cost reduction and increased revenues. If a company is already effectively
on a par with its competitors because it provides service that avoids a damaging
reputation and keeps customers from leaving at an unacceptable rate, then
investment in higher service levels may be wasted, since service is a deciding factor
for customers only in extreme situations.

This truth was not apparent to managers of one regional bank, which failed to
improve its competitive position despite its investment in reducing the time a
customer had to wait for a teller. The bank managers did not recognize the level of
customer inertia in the consumer banking industry that arises from the
inconvenience of switching banks. Nor did they analyze their service
improvement to determine whether it would attract new customers by producing a
new standard of service that would excite customers or by proving difficult for
competitors to copy. The only merit of the improvement was that it could easily be
described to customers.

17. The primary purpose of the passage is to

(A) contrast possible outcomes of a type of business investment

(B) suggest more careful evaluation of a type of business investment
(C) illustrate various ways in which a type of business investment could
fail to enhance revenues
(D) trace the general problems of a company to a certain type of
business investment
(E) criticize the way in which managers tend to analyze the costs and
benefits of business investments

18. According to the passage, investments in service are

comparable to investments in production and distribution in
terms of the

(A) tangibility of the benefits that they tend to confer

(B) increased revenues that they ultimately produce
(C) basis on which they need to be weighed
(D) insufficient analysis that managers devote to them
(E) degree of competitive advantage that they are likely to provide

19. The passage suggests which of the following about service

provided by the regional bank prior to its investment in
enhancing that service?

(A) It enabled the bank to retain customers at an acceptable rate

(B) It threatened to weaken the bank’s competitive position with respect
to other regional banks
(C) It had already been improved after having caused damage to the
bank’s reputation in the past.
(D) It was slightly superior to that of the bank’s regional competitors.
(E) It needed to be improved to attain parity with the service provided
by competing banks.

20. The passage suggests that bank managers failed to consider

whether or not the service improvement mentioned in lines 19

[Nor did they analyze their service improvement to determine

whether it would attract new customers by producing a new
standard of service that would excite customers or by proving
difficult for competitors to copy.]

(A) was too complicated to be easily described to prospective customers

(B) made a measurable change in the experiences of customers in the
bank’s offices
(C) could be sustained if the number of customers increased
significantly
(D) was an innovation that competing banks could have imitated
(E) was adequate to bring the bank’s general level of service to a level
that was comparable with that of its competitors
21. The discussion of the regional bank (line 13-24) serves which
of the following functions within the passage as a whole?

(A) It describes an exceptional case in which investment in service

actually failed to produce a competitive advantage.
(B) It illustrates the pitfalls of choosing to invest in service at a time
when investment is needed more urgently in another area.
(C) It demonstrates the kind of analysis that managers apply when they
choose one kind of service investment over another
(D) It supports the argument that investments in certain aspects of
service are more advantageous than investments in other aspects of
service.
(E) It provides an example of the point about investment in service
made in the first paragraph.

A engineer is planning to build a housing complex on an empty blocks of

land. Exactly seven different designs of houses—F, G, H, I, J, K, and L—
will be built in the complex. The complex will contain several blocks, and
the engineer plans to put houses of at least three different designs on
each block. The engineer will build the complex according to the
following rules:
Any block that has design L on it must also have design J on it.
Any block adjacent to one that has on it both design H and design K
must have on it design I and design L.
No block adjacent to one that has on it both design R and design L can
have on it either design I or design J
No block can have on it both design H and design F.

13. A person’s failure to keep a promise is wrong only if, first, doing so
harms the one to whom the promise is made and, second, all of those
who discover the failure to keep the promise lose confidence in the
person’s ability to keep promises.

Which one of the following judgments most closely conforms to the

principle above?

(A) Ann kept her promise to repay Felicia the money she owned her.
Further, this convinced everyone who knew Ann that she is trustworthy.
Thus, Ann’s keeping her promise was not wrong.

(B) Jonathan took an oath of secrecy concerning the corporation’s

technical secrets, but he sold them to a competitor. His action was
wrong even though the corporation intended that he leak these secretes
to its competitors.

(C) George promised to repay Reiko the money he owed her. However,
George was unable to keep his promise to Reiko and as a result, Reiko
suffered a serious financial loss. Thus, George’s failure to keep his
promise was wrong.

(D) Because he lost his job, Carlo was unable to repay the money he
promised to Miriam. However, Miriam did not need this money nor did
she lose confidence in Carlo’s ability to keep promises. So, Carlo’s
failure to keep his promise to Miriam was not wrong.

(E) Elizabeth promised to return the book she borrowed from Steven
within a week. But she was unable to do so because she became acutely
ill. Not knowing this, Steven lost confidence in her ability to keep a
promise. So, Elizabeth’s failure to return the book to Steven was wrong.
14. Real estate broker: Some people in Country X have postponed home
purchases because of this week's news stories claiming that real estate
prices will probably fall soon. But to get a good deal on a new home, a
better strategy is to buy precisely when the media is advising everyone
to sell. Widespread pessimistic news stories encourage panics that put
downward pressure on real estate prices.

The real estate broker's argument is most vulnerable to criticism on the

grounds that it

A. overlooks the possibility that Country X's real estate prices would
probably fall soon even without any pessimistic news stories

B. assumes, without providing justification, that whether a person

becomes a homebuyer or not depends heavily on personal financial
factors

C. takes for granted that the recent news stories are based on careful
statistical research

D. overlooks the possibility that widespread pessimistic news stories

about real estate prices usually drive those prices to very low levels

E. takes for granted that widespread pessimistic news stories about real
estate prices usually affect those prices quickly

15. Which of the following most logically completes the argument

given?

Asthma, a chronic breathing disorder, is significantly more common

today among adult competitive swimmers than it is among competitive
athletes who specialize in other sports. Although chlorine is now known
to be a lung irritant and swimming pool water is generally chlorinated, it
would be rash to assume that frequent exposure to chlorine is the
explanation of the high incidence of asthma among these swimmers,
since __________.

(A) young people who have asthma are no more likely to become
competitive athletes than are young people who do not have asthma
(B) competitive athletes who specialize in sports other than swimming
are rarely exposed to chlorine

(C) competitive athletes as a group have a significantly lower incidence

of asthma than do people who do not participate in competitive athletics

(D) until a few years ago, physicians routinely recommended

competitive swimming to children with asthma, in the belief that this
form of exercise could alleviate asthma symptoms

(E) many people have asthma without knowing they have it and thus are
not diagnosed with the condition until they begin engaging in very
strenuous activities, such as competitive athletics
