Bibi Halima and Amina-1
She was married to the son of Abdu Mutlaib whose name was Abdullah. She had been married
to ‘Abdullah for a few months when he passed away, leaving her widowed and pregnant.
She said she did not feel any hardship during her pregnancy. Eventually in the year 570 AD she
gave birth to the Holy Prophet PBUH. At his birth, Bibi Amina said: ‘When I delivered him a light
came out with him that illuminated what is between the East and West. The light illuminated
palaces and markets of Syria until I saw the necks of the camels in Basra. I saw three flags
erected: one in the East, one in the West and a third over the Ka’ba.’ From this she knew that
the Holy Prophet would be special. Bibi Amina sent her baby to a wet-nurse (Bibi Halima) in the
desert as was the custom of that time. When he was 2 years old, his foster mother brought him
back to her and requested that she let him remain with her, to which Bibi Amina agreed.
After the incident in which Prophet (pbuh) was visited by some angels who came to clean the
Prophet’s heart (Shaq-e-Sadar), he was returned to Bibi Amina. When the Prophet (pbuh) was
six, his mother took him to visit family in Yathrib, as well as the grave of his father ‘Abdullah.
She became ill and on their return to Makka she passed away at a village called Abwa.
Bibi Halima:
Bibi Halima, a wet nurse, was a member of the Banu Saad tribe. Like many wet nurses of her
time, she sought to care for a child, and when she arrived in Makkah, she found that all other
children had already been taken except for one, who happened to be the Holy Prophet.
She brought the Prophet into her care, entering into an agreement with his mother to care
for him for a span of two years. Having the Prophet in her home brought immense blessings
to her life. Fortunes seemed to shift in her favor, as her goats yielded more milk, her mule,
once slow, gained swiftness, and her camels grew stronger. Two years swiftly passed, and the
time came to return the Holy Prophet to his mother.
However, a pandemic had struck Makkah at that time, and fearing for the child's safety, Bibi
At the close of these extended years, an incident came to Bibi Halima's attention. Her son
reported that he had witnessed two men in white who had opened the chest of Muhammad
ﷺand cleansed his heart in a golden tray. Alarmed, Bibi Halima rushed to the room, only to
Troubled by this strange occurrence, she felt compelled to return the child to his mother after
a few days. The Prophet of Allah affectionately referred to Bibi Halima as his mother. Bibi
Halima once returned to the Prophet (pbuh) at Makka and Khadija gave her 40 sheep as gift. It
is said that Bibi Halima once again came to the holy city of Madina in her last days. She died
there and was buried in Janatul Baqi.
