Christmas is coming, a time full of great joy and wonder. When the Christmas lights twinkle in our streets and houses, lifting our spirits. t's a time to share with friends and families, spending time together, bringing and receiving gifts. The Christmas story is as wonderful today as ever it was. Jesus, the Son of God, born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem. I've been to Bethlehem twice, it's such a special place and very evocative of that time over 2000 years ago. It would have been buzzing with people coming to be registered, families getting together and travellers stopping to rest before journeying on. It is very close to Jerusalem but today there are borders and checkpoints which mark the boundaries and it's not always easy to get through. A favourite carol of mine is. O Little Town of Bethlehem, how still we see these lie. Above the deep and dreamless sleep, the silent Stars go by. Yet in the dark streets shineth, the everlasting light The hopes and fears of all the years are met in the tonight. There are so many carols, old and new which tell the story of that special night over 2000 years ago. In each of our ten churches we have a Carol Service before Christmas. It's a wonderful time to come to church, join in the singing and hear the Christmas story. We have lots going on in December, from Christmas Tree Festivals to school Nativity plays and Christingles. It's all in the magazines and on our website www. ggmbenefice.co.uk The best place to read about the Christmas Story is in the Bible, try Luke, Chapter 2, when the shepherds were on the hillside and the Angel Gabriel told them to go the stable where they would find a baby born to Mary. Let's remember those who find it hard to celebrate, loneliness and hardship make it a tough time. It doesn't all have to be about spending money Christmas is also about being together, round the Christmas tree, not forgetting Father Christmas of course!! So, however you spend your Christmas you can always find a space for the time to welcome Jesus into the world as a baby born in a stable in Bethlehem. God Bless and have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year! Children dressed up in spotty and colourful clothes and enjoyed a bake sale at break-time. In the afternoon, Guillemots class set up a selection of stalls and activities, demonstrating excellent enterprise skills. We were so impressed by their organisational expertise, which resulted in a brilliant sum of £374.40! A big thank you to the School Council, all their helpers and of course, our school families for supporting the day and donating so generously. Our Christmas celebrations began this week with the first disco of the term. We are very lucky to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic PTA who organise and run these events for the children to enjoy. Thank you! Wonderful memories of primary school are created at this time of year. Our youngest children in Puffins and Kittiwakes class are working hard on preparations for their Nativity play ‘Lights, Camel, Action' which they will be performing at the end of term. Children in Key Stage two and our Glee Club choir are preparing for their annual Carol Service at St.Botolph's Church, combined with readings as well as opportunities for instrumentalists to play in front of a large audience. These events provide a wonderful opportunity to work creatively and collaboratively. We were delighted to welcome prospective new families to our Open Days in October but if you missed these dates and have a child who is due to start school in September 2025, do get in touch by calling 01485 600241 or emailing office @hollymeadows.norfolk.sch.uk to arrange a visit. The total amount raised and/or donated came to over £600. o any Roydon Parochial Church Council While we are at it, the rest of the Parochial Church Council would also like to extend thanks to Margaret Gladman, for always ensuring that the Church is clean for services and Colin Grimes for maintaining the churchyard for very much less than a contractor would and which we certainly could not afford. It must be remembered that it is not only regular church-goers who expect the church and churchyard to be there for them for baptisms, weddings and funerals, so any help in cash or actions is very much appreciated. Christmas Coffee and Cake at Congham The next Coffee and Cake morning at St. Andrew's Church will be on Saturday 7th December from 10am-12.30pm. Coffee and Cake £3.50. Raffle and Christmas surprises! Thank you to everyone for your support in 2024. There will be no Coffee morning in January but we will be back again on Saturday 9th February 2025. x aS Village Link | 11 Greenfingers Gardening Club Hi again to all and our Greenfingers members. This month was our Annual AGM and our talk after, by our guest speaker Caroline Holmes. Both subjects of great importance: The first one, our AGM for 2024 which had a worrying prospect of our club folding, as long-standing Chairperson Cynthia has decided to take a well-earned retirement from this very time consuming role. She has worked tirelessly for a number of years well supported by her husband Neville. Good News! Tracey Thorpe has very kindly accepted the role of Chairperson with the understanding that there will be help for her, provided by other Committee members. So, we now start another chapter in our Greenfingers Gardening Club without forgetting Cynthia and Neville for whom we are all very grateful for their dedication keeping our wonderful club going, but will |am sure still be important members of our Club. Now to our speaker Caroline, as | mentioned earlier, her talk was important but for a different reason, and after listening to her talk, understood that gardening can be a very dangerous hobby, as many of our garden plants can do us a great deal of harm. Her talk was about poison plants and was all centered around the very well known Ainwick Poison Garden, which she designed. So many plants are poisonous, and not all have to be digested, take the common or garden Ivy, the dust when removing it, is very nasty if breathe in. just touching others can cause skin irritation, i.e. Daphnia, The sweet pea seed could result in losing your voice, that | thought was interesting to know! Good advice was to wear gloves and wash hands. After finishing her talk Caroline asked if there were any questions, none were asked. | think we were all in shock to think how many plants can be dangerous if not treated with caution. 12 | Village Link Caroline very donated a wonderful book on Ainwick Gardens which was auctioned off. Florina Gaskin was the successful bidder raising £15 for the club. Our guest then chose Plant of the Month. 1" Margaret Gladman 2" Margaret Bowles 3" Eileen Godsall The raffle was then drawn, some of the prizes came from Taylors Autumn Bulb sale Our new Chairperson Tracey closed the meeting by ringing the bell Our next meeting on December 10" is our Christmas Social Evening, it's a chance to meet and chat about how our gardening year has gone, and the usual quizzes plus nibbles will be provided. We ask that you bring your own liquid refreshments plus glasses. Non-members are very welcome, so bring as many friends as you want, but due to price rises a £5 fee is asked for non-members. Until then Happy Gardening. Village Link | 15 Grimston and District WI In October we met Gill Southgate and her guide dog, Adelaide. After telling us all about her experiences over 50 years of needing a guide dog, she had two important points to raise. «If ever you see a visually impaired person with a guide dog trying to cross a road or looking otherwise confused, always ask if you can help. The person is in charge of the dog and tells it when to go, but they rely on the handler listening and hearing the traffic. It is often difficult to hear when the road is clear, especially with electric vehicles. * A major bugbear is vehicles and other items obscuring the footpath. The dog will steer around it but could take the handler into the road where it is not safe. The dog does not know about road safety! At the beginning of November we held our 90" birthday party in the village hall. We welcomed visitors from other local Wis and ex members of Grimston WI. All were entertained by ‘The Cats’ playing a variety of songs from the 1930s to 2000s for all to enjoy and sing along, followed by a delicious cooked meal and cake. Our Annual meeting was also held in November. The members present voted to suspend the WI for up to three years from the end of March. (This decision can be reversed, if we need to, before March 2025!) Unfortunately our membership shows no signs of improving, making it difficult to find new people for the committee and to help with running the institute. We occasionally attract visitors to meetings but they are not ready to commit themselves. Suspension means that any funds are kept with the Federation office in Norwich so that if someone wishes to start it up again within the three years, they have money and support to do so. In the meantime we still have four meetings to look forward to. Our December meeting will be a festive meal at the Three Horseshoes and we will be back in 2025 on January 20*, 7.30 in Grimston Village Hall Pat Watts 16 | Village Link 7 CARPENTRY Qualified carpenter & joiner with over 30 year’s experience * General carpentry * Domestic, commercial & bespoke work * Kitchen fitting * CSCS registered een AAA SCs) OER ey HOUSEHOLD PLUMBING PROBLEMS Tap repairs/ replacements, toilets, sink waste etc All small plumbing jobs, no call out charge Call JOHN on 01553 631792 Established go LS é =e Charity No. GS D4 1973 oi IN' i On F In the grounds of Gayton PrBaago!, Lynn Road, Gayton FULL DAY CARE. 8.00AM - 6.00PM ( from 2 years old ) BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS QUALIFIED STAFF PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL IN A SAFE AND FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT OPEN MONDAY TO FRIQIBY weeks) 2 year funding available subject to entitlement CONTACT ALISON JONES ON : 01553 636606 %, a NEVILLE GODFREY LTD For all your asphalt and tarmac Driveways, footpaths, forecourts and tennis courts etc Please phone for free estimate and advice 01553 771406 / 07909 905456 07546 020204 theoldbellgrimston @ gmail.com www.theoldbellgrimston.com Village Link | 17 1% Dec 8.30am 9.30am 10.30am 4 Dec 9am 8" Dec 8.30am 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am 15" Dec 9.30am 10.30am 10.30am 3pm 3pm 7pm 16" Dec 6pm 17" Dec 6pm 18" Dec gam 7pm 20" Dec 6pm 21% Dec 6pm 22"4 Dec 8.30am 10.30am 10.30am 10.30am 6pm 24" Dec 8.30am 4pm 4pm 41.30pm 18 | Village Link SERVICES FOR DECEMBER 2024 Advent Sunday All Saints Roydon St Lawrence Harpley St Botolph Grimston St Lawrence Harpley 2"¢ Sunday in Advent St Andrew Congham St Nicholas Gayton St Andrew Lt Massingham St Mary Gt Massingham 3*¢ Sunday in Advent St Lawrence Harpley St Botolph Grimston St Mary Gt Massingham St Nicholas Gayton St Mary Gt Massingham All Saints Roydon Ashwicken School St Botolph Grimston St Botolph Grimston St Mary East Walton St Andrew Congham St Mary Gayton Thorpe St Mary East Walton St Nicholas Gayton St Mary Gt Massingham St Andrew Lt Massingham St Lawrence Harpley Christmas Eve St Andrew Congham St Nicholas Gayton St Mary Gt Massingham St Botolph Grimston Holy Communion Family Service Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Holy Communion Songs of Praise Songs of Praise Sung Eucharist Advent Holy Communion Holy Communion Carol service Carol Service Carol service Carol service Carol service Holy Communion Carol Service Carol service. The Spring and Autumn litter picks were well attended, and it is always pleasing to see so many children of the parish volunteering to bring benefit to their community October saw the annual bulb planting event take place. This year we changed things up, we planted Crocus and Daffodils on the verges at Hudson Fen and Snowdrops in Queens Wood. Gaywood Valley Conservation Group visited Queens Wood and did a first-class job of clearing the area to allow the trees to thrive and we are grateful to them for maintaining the wood for our community. The jewel in the council's events crown is the Fen Fest event which is a great family day of music and entertainment for all ages. The Community Events Committee are already hard at work organising Fen Fest 2025 to ensure the event will be memorable. Sponsorship is key to the continuation of Fen Fest and we thank the sponsors that supported this years event. This year we also welcomed Anglian Water to a parish meeting in April to hear the concerns of our community, it was a great success and was followed by a community engagement event which took place throughout the day where residents got to hear about Anglian Water plans for our parish. The work has already begun and will continue to undertake works to alleviate some of the causes of the flooding issues. The Parish Council would like to wish all our residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to serving the community in 2025. 20 | Village Link Rachael Spooner ; MCFHP MAFHP ERWORK Foot health professional ‘We carry oat all electrical and are approved contractors. Again, the council thanks Kath and Karl at The Anvil Inn for hosting the bike rack. Finally, the parish council would like to take this opportunity to wish all our parishioners a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. . RSPCA EAST WINCH . A statement from the Bishop of Norwich following the publication of the Makin report and the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury “| have been utterly appalled by the contents of the Makin Review into the crimes of John Smyth and the response of those who knew about them. Of most concern to me, and the focus of my thoughts and prayers, are the survivors of his horrific abuse. | have been in touch with Archbishop Justin over the past few days and support him in his decision to resign. He and his family are in my prayers. It is up to all of us working in the Church of England today to ensure that everyone who comes into contact with the Church is kept safe. The Carol Service will be held at 3pm on Sunday December ‘st. If you are reading this and missed the great event, then there will be a further chance to see the trees on December 12th at 10.30am, which is our monthly coffee morning. Or, come along on the afternoon of December 31st when we are hosting the ARC group, Christmas crafts (and chaos!) for children, we join with our friends from St Botolph's for this. There's generally a lot of glitter And, of course, we also have our Sunday services which are usually held at 10.30am - on December 8th it is Local Arrangement, on December 15th Irene Garrod, on December 22nd Marianne Baguely and on Christmas Day there will be ‘carols around the organ’ at 10am. In the New Year we have a service on January 5th where Rev Ncube leads us in renewing our covenant, on the 19th we welcome Elizabeth Batstone and the 26th is a Local Arrangement. Our January coffee morning is on the 9th. We wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas time!
