ME3393 MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
PART-A QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS-REGULATION 2021.( NOV/DEC 2022)
1. What are the types of materials used for making patterns?
Wood, metal, plastics, and wax. The pattern material is chosen based on the casting volume and process used. Wood and metal patterns are usually used with sand casting, while wax is rarely used for anything but investment casting. 2. Suggest a casting method for making metal components of thin sections with high dimensional accuracy and good surface finish. DIE CASTING: Along with the high degree of dimensional accuracy, die casting provides the ability to cast thinner parts. The benefit of thin-walled parts is a lighter-weight part. Parts that require internal cavities and have complex shapes are also a good fit for a die-casting process 3. What are the basic equipment needed for oxy-fuel welding? Essential equipment components torch body (or handle) two separate gas tubes (through the handle connected to the hoses) separate control valves. mixer chamber. flame tube. welding tip. 4. Mention few ways to reduce weld defects in thermit welding of rails. It can be achieved by increasing the 25 mm weld gap (standard) to a slightly larger value. of welding parameters. during thermite welding can be quite dissimilar. mating between the weld mould and the rail surface. 5. List few advantages of cold working of metals. Advantages of Cold Working Superior surface finish is attainable as there is no oxidation during cold metalworking. Enhanced strength and hardness of the metal are achieved. Cold working imparts increased strength and hardness to the metal. 6. Propose a method for a company that aims at mass producing screws and bolts. It starts with cold forging steel wire into the right shape, followed by heat treating to improve strength and surface treating to improve durability, before being packed for shipment. However, for more advanced bolt designs, the production process can expand by a number of additional steps. 7. What is the expected requirements of sheet metal in automobile industries? The products in the automotive and vehicle industry use a large volume of steel sheets. Those shapes are fit for the brackets, frames, chassis, plate, covers and the shields, which are covered most shapes of the car parts. It's a perfect process for car manufacturing. 8. In producing large parts, discuss how tooling cost is reduced by going for explosive forming. Explosive forming has been mainly used in aerospace and aircraft industry to produce large parts for which conventional tooling costs are high. It involves the discharge of explosives located at a predetermined distance from the workpiece, and water is generally used as the energy transfer medium. 9. What are the applications of plunger and-screw machines? The plunger-type injection molding machine consists of two main parts – a plunger and a cylinder that has a screw at its end. This type of machine is used to create a variety of plastic products for consumer and industrial use, including toys and household items. 10. Suggest a process to an industry which best suits for one-step fabrication of plastic components with a decorated or functional surface? Injection molding Injection molding is the most common plastic fabrication process. It can process thermoplastic and thermoset polymers. This fast plastic fabrication method works by heating plastic pellets until they melt, then forcing the molten plastic into a metal mold using a reciprocating screw.
