3. HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS
Total catchment area = 63 Ha

Discharge, Q = 0.21 A (A In sqm) (Ref. para 2.2.7.2 of E-in-C 70/1)

= 0.21 x 63
= 13.23 cumecs.
Calculation of waterway:
Allowable velocity in a concrete finished structure is (V ) = 3.49 m/s

 Area required = Q/V

 Area required = 3.79 sqm
Consider a depth of water in box Culvert as 2m
let us provide
1 numbers of 2 m x 2m barrel
water way area available
1 * 2 * 2
- 1.00 *2* 〖0.3〗^2
= 3.82 sqm.
Hence
provided area of water way is ok
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒 1 𝑛𝑜’𝑠 𝑜𝑓 2 𝑚* 2 𝑚 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑙.
Hence actual velocity generated in the barrel =

Q/A = 13.230 / 3.82 = 3.463 m/s

TheVelocity is within Permissible Limits (i.e. < 3.5m/s).

HFL Calculations: (As Per apra 2.2.2 of E-in-C70/1)

Assuming HFL At 323.961 (as per Local Enquiry )

n = 0.025
Area of Cross section = 8.01 sqm
Wetted Perimeter P = 24.83 m
Hydraulic Mean Depth R= 0.322581 m
Nala Bed Slope = 1 : 129

By Manning Formula 2/3 1/2

V = 1 * R * S
n 2/3 1/2

= 1 * 0.323 * 0.008
0.025

= 1.656497 m/sec

Q = A*V
Q = 13.27 Cumecs
4. SCOUR DEPTH

4.1 NORMAL SCOUR DEPTH

Consider value of F = 2.75 (Annexure 2.4.1) (Ref. Para 2.4.1 of E-IN-C 70/1)
The required normal scour depth = 0.473 (Q/F )^(1/3)
= 0.473 ( 13.23 / 2.75)^(1/3)
= 0.80 m below HFL
4.2 SCOUR DEPTH FOR RESTRICTED WATER WAY
〖𝐷=𝐷′(𝑊/𝐿)〗^0.61
(Ref.para 2.4.1 of E-IN-C 70/1)
Where D =regime scour depth in m.

W = 4.8(Q) ½
= 17.46 m
L = 1∗ 2 +0.600 = 2.6 m

D = 0.80〖( 17.46/ 2.6)〗^0.61

D = 2.55 m below HFL

4.3 MAXIMUM SCOUR DEPTH

〖𝐷=𝐷′(𝑊/𝐿)〗^1.56
(Ref.para 2.4.2 of E-IN-C 70/1)
Where D =regime scour depth in m.

W = 4.8(Q) ½
= 17.46 m
L = 1∗ 2 ∗ +0.600 = 2.6 m

D = 0.80〖( 17.46 / 2.6 )〗^1.56

D = 15.58 m below HFL

However since floor is protected with bed concrete (P.C.C. M-10)

Therefore depth criteria will be followed as per E-IN-C 70/1 2.4.3 rule 4.
i.e. designed scour depth = 1.27 * restricted waterway scour depth.
= 1.27 * 2.55 = 3.2 m below HFL.
HENCE LET US PROVIDE SCOUR LEVEL AT 3 M BELOW HFL.
SCOUR LEVEL = 323.961 - 3
SCOUR LEVEL = 320.721 m
5. HEAD LOSS CALCULATIONS

5.1 APPROXIMATE LENGTH OF CULVERTS

In order to calculate the approximate length of barrel, let us consider

BED WIDTH = 3.5 m

TBL-CBL= 326.213 - 322.313 = 3.9 m
3.9 x 1.5 x 2 = 11.7 m

RIGHT NON SERVICE BANK WIDTH = 2.5 m

LEFT SERVICE BANK WIDTH = 3.3 m
RIGHT SIDE SLOPE HEIGHT
TBL - U/S Top level of breast wall = 326.213 - 325.032 m
1.181
2.362 m
LEFT SIDE SLOPE LENGTH
TBL - D/S Top level of Breast wall 326.213 - 324.281 m
1.932 m
3.864 m

HENCE TOTAL LENGTH OF BARREL =

3.5 + 11.700 + 2.50 + 3.30 + 2.362 + 3.864
= 28.026 m
5.2 HEAD LOSS
V1 = 1.66 m/sec in original nala.
V2 = 3.46 m/sec in through the barrel.

5.3 ENTRY LOSS

entry loss = 〖−𝑉1〗^2)/2𝑔
〖0.2(𝑉2〗^
= EL = 0.09 m
5.4 EXIT LOSS
Exit loss = 〖0.3(𝑉2〗^
〖−𝑉1〗^2)/2𝑔
= EL = 0.1414 m
5.5 FRICTION LOSS

Head Loss Hf = ( 1 + f1 + f2 * L/R ) 〖𝑉〗^2)/2𝑔

f1 = Coefficient for Loss of Head at entry 0.505 for unshaped mouth and
0.08 for bell mouth
f2 = a( 1+ b/ R )
where, a= 0.00316
b= 0.03
f2 = 0.00316(1+ 0.057 )
= 0.0033

Here,
Length of Culvert = 28.03 m
velocity in Culvert= 3.463 m/s
Coefficient of Rugosity, n = 0.018
Gross Sectional Area, A= 3.8200 sqm
Gross wetted perimeter, P = 7.2 m
Hydraulic mean Depth,R = A/P= 0.530556 m

(1+ 0.080 + 0.0033 x 28.026 ) + 0.611

0.531
friction loss= 0.768 m

total head loss = 0.768 m

5.6 SLOPE OF BARREL

velocity in barrel,V = 3.46 m/s
Hydraulic mean Depth, R = 0.53 m
Coefficient of Rugosity, n = 0.018
As we know by manning’s formula,
V= 𝑅^(2/3) 𝑆^(
S = (V*𝑛/𝑅^(2/3))^2
S = ( 3.46 * 0.018 / 0.655371)^2
S = 0.009048
therefore provide
0.25359 m slope is needed for 28.03 m of barrel
therefore provide 0.3 m slope
6. DESIGN OF BOX UNDER CANAL BANK

CONDITION: BARREL IS EMPTY AND EARTH ABOVE BARREL IS SATURATED

* Design under bed: - Since canal size is small hence provide same section of
barrel as that barrel under bank. Thus no need to go for design separately.

6.1 DEAD LOAD

Height of banking above barrel = TBL – D/S Baller Top
= 326.213 - 322.013
= 4.2 m
let us take it 4.2 m
DEAD LOAD OF EARTH = 4.2 * 1.8 = 7.56 t/sqm
DEAD LOAD OF TOP SLAB = 0.35 ∗ 2.4 = 0.84 t/sqm
HENCE TOTAL DEAD LOAD = 8.4 t/sqm
6.2 LIVE LOAD (Class A – A loading)

10.7

9.8

LOADING Intensity per sqm = 11.4 x 2 / 10.7 9.8 = 0.21633 t/ sqm

HENCE TOTAL LOAD ON TOP SLAB = Dead load + Live load

= 8.4 + 0.22
= 8.616 t/sqm
LOADING ON BOTTOM SLAB = Loading on top slab + D.L. of barrel
= 8.616329 + 1.40444
= 10.02 t/sqm

LOADING, REACTION AND MOMENTS ON SIDE WALLS
