Brief History of organization
Birth of the Akshayapatra foundation the history of Akshayapatra foundation starts
with a story of compassion.
Looking out of a window one day in mayapur ,a village near Calcutta, his
divine Grace A.C Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada saw a group of children
fighting with street dogs over scraps of food. From this simple, yet heart breaking
incident, came the determination that No one within a ten mile radius of their
center should go hungry.
It is his inspiration which helped them to create the Akshayapatra
foundation as it is today. They began this initiative with the vision that “No child
in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.”
In June 2000 they started their mid-day meal in Bangalore by feeding
1500 children in 5 schools.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a non-profit organization based in India that aims
to address the issue of hunger and promote education among children. The
foundation’s main objective is to provide nutritious mid-day meals to school
children in order to eliminate classroom hunger and encourage regular school
attendance.
8
attendance rates, particularly among children from economically disadvantaged
backgrounds.
Improving nutrition: The foundation emphasizes the importance of nutrition in the
growth and development of children. It strives to provide balanced and nutritious
meals, which not only satisfy immediate hunger but also contribute to the overall
health and wellbeing of the children.
Enhancing community engagement: Akshaya Patra collaborates with various
stakeholders, including governments, corporates, and individuals, to implement its
programs effectively. The foundation actively engages with the community to
foster partnerships and encourage collective action in addressing the issue of
hunger and education.
9
Improved Concentration and Performance: Adequate nutrition plays a vital role in
cognitive development. The meals provided by Akshaya Patra help children
concentrate better in class, improving their learning outcomes and academic
performance. When children are well-nourished, they can fully engage in their
studies and benefit from the educational opportunities provided.
Holistic Development: The foundation focuses on the holistic development of
children by providing not only meals but also implementing various initiatives.
These initiatives include health check-ups, hygiene programs, career guidance, and
life skills training. By addressing the broader needs of children, Akshaya Patra
contributes to their overall growth and development
Scalability: Akshaya Patra operates in multiple locations across India and serves
millions of children every day. Ensuring the scalability of their operations and
maintaining quality standards can be a complex task.
Infrastructure and logistics: Managing a large-scale operation like Akshaya Patra
requires significant infrastructure, including kitchens, transportation, and storage
facilities.
10
Awareness and outreach: Creating awareness about the organization’s mission and
reaching out to schools, parents, and communities to participate in the program can
be a constant effort. Building trust and maintaining good relationships with
stakeholders is essential for the success of Akshaya Patra’s initiatives.
While the foundation has made significant progress in tackling hunger and
education challenges, there are still millions of children in India who need
assistance. The report highlights the need for continued efforts and increased
collaboration with various stakeholders to reach more beneficiaries and create
sustainable long-term solutions.

Recently, the Foundation was awarded for the fifth consecutive year with the Gold
Shield by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for Excellence in
Financial Reporting for the year 2012-2013. Akshaya Patra is by far the only not-for-
profit entity to have gained entrance into the ICAI Hall of Fame since it won the Gold
Shield for the fifth time.
The League of American communications Professionals (LACP) also
presented The Akshaya Patra Foundation with Gold Award for excellence in its
industry in the Development of the organization’s Annual Report within the fiscal
year 2012-2013. At the PRCI Global Communication Conclave 2014, the
organization was recognized with Corporate Collateral Award (Gold) in the Annual
Reports category. This is only some of the much recognition earned by the
Foundation.
The Annual Report of The Akshaya Patra Foundation contains a highly
detailed account on its financials and their breakup recorded over that particular fiscal
year. Right from the amount of funds gained through Grants from the Central and
State Governments and donations, the report gives a complete account on the
Foundation’s monetary management. Large amount of funds is required not only to
erect massive centralized kitchen infrastructures, but also to maintain them. Since the
centralized kitchens utilize customized equipment for most of their operations, it is
quite a challenge to restore old ones with new or to fix equipment. Funds are also
needed to train employees and kitchen staff to ensure rigorous hygiene and quality
while cooking.
12
The constant and strict focus on transparency has always resulted in accolades
and felicitation for Akshaya Patra. The Foundation’s Board currently comprises eight
Trustees who hail from diverse professional backgrounds. This Board plays a primary
role in ensuring the maintenance of an impeccable record of funds utilized while
implementing the programmed, since the Foundation follows a regular process of
submitting Monthly Financials to the Board.
The Board of Trustees follows a systematic method of governance within the
organization. At The Akshaya Patra Foundation, there is a list of mandatory
objectives or actions to be observed by each member of the Board, one of which is
gathering for regular meetings. The versatility of these members brings out
suggestions and opinions during these meetings that help better the functioning of the
Foundation so as to aid in its outreach and expansion while maintaining financial
transparency and reporting.
At The Akshaya Patra Foundation, we believe that getting nominated by the
jury for all these awards itself is a level of recognition, while winning them is
another. This constant acknowledgement and appreciation of our work has always
motivated us to progress. We also believe that the relentless support from the
Governments and donors, as well as testimonies from our beneficiaries is helping us
approach our mission of reaching out to 5 million children by 2020.

Akshaya Patra – Contributions towards a sustainable Mid-day Meal program
for rural schools in Guwahati The visit to the Kitchen gave the Design students an
exposure to the way in which a large scale organization can effectively exist and
operate and contribute invaluably to the society in the context of a developing
country like India and for the Norwegian students a unique learning opportunity in an
altogether different scenario.
13
This workshop was a collaborative learning experience about the different
aspects of sustainability. In all the aspects of the three P’s of sustainability namely
People, Planet & profit, this organization gave enough guidance to the students in
learning. Even though the organization is not operating for profits, the whole process
is so efficiently designed at par with any profit organization which itself reveals that
the aspect of profit in the domain of sustainability is more to make the organization
more efficient, optimized, and competent. For example the use of ‘Thick Gauged’
(1.6mm) Stainless steel material for the vessels give it a long life and also reuse of the
same vessels many times which eliminates the use of any plastic containers and
packaging which generates wastes. The washing of these utensils are also done in a
very systematic and efficient manner. This can be a useful method of adoption for
organizations that operate in large scale like Indian Railways where a good dish
washing system if developed can help reduce the use of plastic packaging that
becomes the huge junk of wastes generated and littered around. The quality checks at
each step and the surveillance for the wastes at all stages not only makes the process
more effective but also gives leverage to the environment concern factor.
14
Akshayapatra foundation is a good example of a product service system
where they are not preparing food alone instead the whole process is defined from
raw material procurement, cooking, packaging, transportation, return of vessels and
waste disposal making it a closed loop. This close loop makes it more responsible in
terms of waste minimization and waste disposal.
