READ THIS MANUAL IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE OPERATING THE MPA DEFENDER SERIES WEAPON

WARNING
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms classifies this MPA Defender Series unit as a firearm or dangerous weapon. If used or handled improperly it can cause injury and possibly death. Read and understand this manual before using this unit. Follow

instruction with the utmost regard to safety, handling, operation, cleaning, selection of ammunition etc Failure to follow instruction and safety precautions could cause

personal injury and/or damage to firearm unit and may void your warranty.

Always assume the gun is loaded until you positively verify that the chamber is empty.

Failure to follow any of the warnings in this section and manual can result in serious injury or death. By purchasing this firearm, you agree to these requirements. Do not permit others to use the weapon until they have read this manual and are familiar with the safety precautions for operating this firearm. Your safety and the safety of your family and others depend on your safe and mature adoption, development and consistent employment of SAFE FIREARMS HANDLING PRACTICES. If you are unfamiliar with firearms, seek further advice through safe handling courses run by your local gun clubs, qualified instructors, or similar qualified organizations. Always store ammunition separately from the firearm. All loaded weapons are very dangerous, treat them accordingly. Never carry this weapon in a pocket, purse, or other carrying case while loaded. Be aware of the direction the gun is pointed at all times. Whether the gun is loaded or unloaded, never point the gun at any thing you do not intend to shoot. Do not touch the trigger unless you intend to fire the gun. Before loading, make sure that the safety selector is in the SAFE position. Verify that the bore of the barrel is not obstructed in any way before loaded. Note that congealed oils and greases in the bore are obstructions. Also verify that no case or live round is in the chamber before loading. Failure to do so can cause serious injury.

While loading, always be certain that the weapon is point in a safe direction. Do not load the chamber of the weapon (see Loading for details) until you are ready to shoot. Once the chamber is loaded and the safety selector is set to FIRE, the weapon will fire if the trigger is pulled. Always wear firearms related safety glasses and hearing protection when firing this weapon. Do not shoot at hard surfaces or at water. Bullets can unpredictably ricochet in any direction and unintentionally injure or damage someone or something. Be aware of what is behind your target because a bullet may travel up to a mile past the target. If in doubt about safety, DONT FIRE. When unloading this weapon, remove the magazine, and only after the magazine has been removed, pull back the bolt to visually check to verify that the chamber is empty. It is not normal for this weapon to malfunction. If it malfunctions, stop using it immediately and do not use it again until the source of the problem is positively identified and competently corrected by the manufacturer or a reputable gunsmith. When working on a malfunctioning gun, always assume that it is loaded. Wear eye and ear protection and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. The design and tolerances found in the MPA Defender Series guns require genuine MasterPiece Arms manufactured parts. Do not make alterations. Such changes can make the weapon unsafe and will void the warranty. Before cleaning the weapon, always be certain that it is not loaded. Never lubricate a loaded gun and never get lubricant on ammunition. Lubricant may damage ammunition leading to misfires. This warnings and precautions in this manual are applicable to all MPA weapons. All warnings and precautions are applicable to all other makes and models. Always keep your hands, face, fingers or other appendages away from the ejection port on the side of the weapon. Never hold, handle or grab the gun in this area. This is location where hot cases eject and the bolt opens and closes. This is a potential pinch point and failure to adhere to this warning could cause injury. DO NOT REST THE GUN ON THE MAGAZINE WHILE FIRING, DOING SO WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO BOTH THE MAGAZINE AND THE GUN. Do Not Dry Fire the MPA22. This will cause damage to the firing pin and will void the warranty on the Firing Pin and Barrel. Unless you plan on firing the weapon, make sure the chamber is empty of a live round. We recommend that you dont store your weapon with a live round in the chamber. Once you have completed your firing exercise, remove the live round from the chamber.

3) INITIAL INSPECTION
Examine the delivered gun. All MasterPiece Arms weapons are factory inspected, serial numbered and logged, and shipped with a bonded carrier. However, MasterPiece Arms cannot control damage, operation, or pilferage between delivery to the wholesaler and the ultimate purchase. Refer to the dealer if any damage or missing parts are noted.

4) SELECTION OF AMMUNITION
MasterPiece Arms recommends new (not reloaded) quality ammunition. Quality ammunition helps to assure consistent performance. For best performance, we recommend Ammo listed below. Due to the nature of the design (designed originally as a Sub-Machine Gun), compression rates, timing, spring pressure, bullet geometry and profile, lubricity of the bullet and cartridge, and other factors, use of any ammo not on the approved list will cause less reliable feed/firing performance.

LOADING THE MAGAZINE

You can load the magazine by hand or the Slide Optional Mag Loader over magazine as shown below.
b. Push Mag Loader downward to compress follower.

c. While follower is compressed, insert bullet all the way in magazine until the bullet hits the finger

of the Mag Loader.

d. Raise the Optional Mag Loader until the finger allows the bullet to pass under. Push the bullet

back until it stops against the inside wall of the magazine. Repeat steps until magazine is full or desired amount of ammo is loaded in magazine.

e. Note: Magazine will load more than 25 rounds but will not function properly.

f. The MPA22 Magazine is a Double Stack Magazine. When loading the magazine, pay attention

to the stacking of the cases in the back of the mag. You can see through the smoke polycarbonate to verify no single stacking has occurred. Here is a picture of this condition:

When you see this condition, unload the magazine and reload. This single stack condition can cause feed issues due to the round to get stuck in the magazine and not presenting itself at the proper location in the magazine for the bolt to engage it and push it up the feed ramp and into the chamber. This is how the magazine should be loaded throughout all the rounds in the mag:

7) LOADING THE WEAPON

Always be certain that the safety selector is in the Safe Position before loading. a.Insert the magazine into the mag-housing. You should hear the Mag Catch click into place. b.Always pull downward on the magazine to make sure the Mag Catch is holding on the magazine lip.

c. Pull the cocking handle all the way back (remembering to keep the

muzzle pointed in a safe direction) and release it. This will put a round in the chamber. Dont slowly slide the cocking handle forward. When you release it from its rearward position, the recoil spring will close the bolt while taking a round from the magazine into the chamber and closing the bolt securely against the breach face of the barrel.
d. Only when youre ready to fire the weapon, rotate the safety selector to the Fire position. Now

the weapon is ready to fire. Always make sure the weapon is pointed in a safe direction especially when you have the safety in the Fire position. Never touch the trigger with the weapon in this state unless you intend to fire it.

8) UNLOADING THE WEAPON

a. Always treat the gun as if it is loaded. Turn the safety selector to the Safe position. Press the

Mag Catch downward with your thumb and pull on the magazine. This should allow the magazine to be completely removed.
b. Always treat the gun as if it is loaded.

Turn the safety selector to the Safe position. Press the Mag Catch downward with your thumb and pull on the magazine. This should allow the magazine to be completely removed.
c. After magazine has been removed from weapon,

assume that there is still a round in the chamber. To remove a round from the chamber, open the bolt by pulling the cocking handle all the way back. This should eject the unspent round, but always visually check to make sure the chamber is empty. If there is still a round in the chamber, carefully remove it. If youre unsure about this procedure, please take your weapon to a gun smith.

9) CLEANING THE WEAPON Due to the nature of .22LR Ammo, the MPA22 will require frequent cleaning. Simply follow the disassembly instructions in this section to gain access to the inside of the weapon. Free and smooth movement of the bolt, firing pin, recoil spring & rod, ejector rod is important. The gun needs to be cleaned after a minimum of 150-200 rounds and sometimes more often depending on the ammo used. a. Make certain that the weapon is completely unloaded. Turn
the safety selector to the Fire Position and pull the trigger. The hammer must be released before disassembly. Using a 5/32 or smaller pin punch, push inner receiver pin out far enough to pull it out by hand.

b. After removing receiver pin, turn use the head to pin far enough out hand.

the inner pin around and push the outer to remove by

c. Once the receiver pins have been removed, the upper receiver will advance forward slightly. Lift the front of the upper receiver up as shown below. You will hear the hammer release (this is normal). Pull the upper receiver and bolt assembly out of the frame in the direction shown below. d. Slide bolt assembly all the back until it stops. At this point the cocking handle is aligned with the large hole at the back end of the top slot in the upper receiver. Pull the cocking handle straight up. This will allow the bolt assembly to slide out the back opening in the upper receiver.

e. e. Clean any residue from all parts and wipe with a light oil. Follow the special cleaning instructions below for the MPA22. To reassemble, proceed to the next step. f. Reinstall the bolt assembly in the opposite direction as it came out. g. After removing the upper receiver, the hammer will not be cocked. It will be pivoted forward. Before reinstalling the upper receiver, the hammer must be cocked. Rotate hammer up and back toward back of frame, then down until it clicks and is held back by the sear. The hammer is now cocked. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP h. Reinstall upper receiver and bolt assembly back onto frame reverse of the disassembly shown in steps 9-A 9-D. The lack of cleanliness of the following items will affect the performance of this weapon: The surface finish of the bottom rail on the bolt. Periodically, inspect the bottom rail of the bolt. This area should be clean and free from nicks or other damage. If needed, use Scotchbrite or fine steel wool to clean and smooth this area.

The surface finish of case seat in the bolt and the vertical rail below it. This is the area that the back of the bullet case slides up into the seat (of the bolt) during the feeding operation. Any dirt, residue or grim can prohibit a smooth transition from the magazine up the bolt face and into the chamber.

the red plate until the spring plunger is free to come out of the magazine. Be careful, since the spring plunger is under spring pressure and will come out quickly along with the spring. Be ready to contain it. Pull out the spring and follower and simply clean the inside of the magazine area with a standard pistol or rifle cleaning rod/cloth. Once cleaned, reassemble.

Firing Pin Chamber. If your Weapon begins to misfire where a slight or non-existent impression is found on the case shoulder of a fired case, then you may need to clean the Firing Pin Chamber. To do this, remove the spring pin in the bolt that holds the firing pin. Use a hammer and a small punch (if one is not available, you can grind/sand a flat on the pointed end of a small nail that is the same diameter of the spring pin) and tap the spring pin all the way out of the bolt. Then remove the firing pin and spring. Clean out the Firing Pin Chamber with a chamber or bore brush to remove the dirt and grime that is a result of .22 ammo. Then place the spring back onto the firing pin and replace in the bolt. Depress the firing pin/spring into the firing pin chamber and replace the spring pin until flush with the back of bolt and then tap the spring pin back into bolt. Make sure the undercut (spring pin slot) that is on the firing pin is facing the extractor side of the bolt when tapping the spring pin back into place.

The inside area of the upper receiver needs to be cleaned periodically. This area is highly susceptible to residue from 22 ammo and will slow down the operation of the bolt. The hardened bolt slides in this area so it should be cleaned to provide a smooth surface to slide.

11. MPA22 Troubleshooting

Failure

Cause
Wrong type of ammo. Are you using a .22LR that is not on the approved list? Check the movement of the bolt. It needs to be smooth moving back and forth in the upper receiver. The gun may need cleaning The chamber needs to be cleaned. Use a chamber brush in a rechargeable drill or drill press and clean out the chamber The firing pin is stuck in the bolt due to a cleaning requirement. Is the firing pin stock in the forward position, the firing pin chamber needs cleaning. The chamber is damaged. Check the appearance of the chamber. Are there any misshapen features. Please keep in mind there is a small "blend" at the bottom of the chamber to allow a smooth transition for the bullet into the chamber from the magazine. Before trying to fix this, contact MPA or take the gun to your local gunsmith. The Gun needs the initial 250+ round break in period.

Bullet Gets Bent and Jams into the chamber when feeding

The Bolt skips over the next round in the magazine and does not chamber a round.

There bolts movement is not free enough in the upper to go back far enough to grab the next round. Check the movement of the bolt both cocked and uncocked. Is it smooth and free? If its not free, the gun needs to be cleaned and to be lubricated. The bolt MUST go back far enough to cock the hammer and to grab the next round. The cocking knob should go all the back in the slot on the upper on each fired round.

Faulty Round Stuck or slow moving firing pin. You can check this by looking down the top cocker slot in the upper to see if the firing pin is stuck inside the bolt. If its not stuck. Take a rod or pin and check the movement of the firing pin to make sure its springing properly. If not, then 22 ammo residue has collected in the firing pin chamber and needs to be cleaned out. Residue, brass, gunk, or something is keeping the case from seating itself in the chamber undercut on the barrel. Use a chamber brush in a rechargeable drill or drill press and clean out this area

Misfire

12. Special Notes

The normal break-in period for this weapon is 250 rounds. Due to compression rates, pressure, spring performance, bolt weight, and many other factors, the gun performs best with the barrel extension attached. This provides an additional length of time of rearward pressure that pushes the bolt back into the upper receiver, allowing proper hammer cocking and feeding of the next round. Lubrication will be necessary on this weapon. The smooth and consistent movement of the bolt assembly in the upper is required for consistent and reliable function of this MPA22. There are many gun lubes on the market, but a light oil will work the best. A heavy or thick lube will collect the residue from the 22 ammo and begin to lap the inner section of the upper receiver and potentially the bolt. We recommend lubricating the gun at every cleaning (200 rounds) or more frequently if necessary.
