READING
1 Read about how we make chocolate. Answer the questions.
Chocolate isn't very easy to make. It comes from cocoa beans that grow in pods
on trees. In the beginning, the cocoa pods are small and green, but then they
grow and change colour. Some cocoa pods are as big as footballs! When the
cocoa pods are yellow, orange or purple, the cocoa farmers take them from the
trees and open them. Inside, there are between 20 and 50 cocoa beans. Cocoa
beans aren't sweet at all; they're very sour. The farmers put all the beans in a box
for a week to make sure they're ready for making chocolate. Then they take them
out of the box and dry them in the sun. After that, they send the beans to factories.
In the factories, workers put the beans in ovens and roast them. Then they put the
beans in different machines. One machine makes the powder we use for hot
chocolate. The other machines turn the beans into different mixtures to make
chocolate. Dark chocolate is quite bitter because it is minimum 70% cocoa and
about 30% sugar. Milk chocolate is sweeter because it has less cocoa, more
sugar and some milk. But the sweetest chocolate is white chocolate: it has a lot of
sugar and some milk, but not very much cocoa!

3 Read Tom’s article about his sisters and then answer the questions.
Surviving my sisters!
I’ve got two sisters, Meg and Jen. They’re twins and they’re two years older than
me. They were very close and they didn’t like me – well, that’s what I thought!
They didn’t let me come into their bedroom. They sometimes told our parents that
I did things I didn’t do. For example, I remember one time when they ate a big
cake. Mum made the cake for her friend’s birthday. But my sisters said I ate it! My
father always believed my sisters and he got cross with me. My mother usually
believed me and then my sisters called me a ‘Mummy’s boy’. My sisters were
always together and I was always alone at home.
Sometimes my sisters were nice to me. On my birthday, they bought me really
cool presents. And when someone at school was horrible to me they helped me.
People were a bit scared of my sisters at school! My sisters also took me to the
swimming pool sometimes and that was always fun.
Now that I’m older, I understand that my sisters loved me and I loved them, but we
were just different and we were interested in different things. When I got older, I
talked to my sisters about my problems. I’m quite lucky really!
