questions of 3 marks each; Section– D has 2 case-based questions of 4 marks each; and Section–E has 3 questions

of 5 marks each.

Blood is the medium of transport for O2 and CO2. About 97 percent of O2 is transported by RBCs in the blood.
The remaining 3 percent of O2 is carried in a dissolved state through the plasma. Nearly 20-25 percent of CO2 is
transported by RBCs whereas 70 percent of it is carried as bicarbonate. About 7 percent of CO2 is carried in a
dissolved state through plasma.

30. Read the following text carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
The detailed structure of the membrane was studied only after the advent of the electron microscope in the
1950s. Meanwhile, chemical studies on the cell membrane, especially in human red blood cells (RBCs), enabled
the scientists to deduce the possible structure of the plasma membrane. These studies showed that the cell
membrane is composed of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates.
