For this assignment, you will read Congressman P. B. Porter's 1810 speech "Internal
Improvements," which can be found on the AP U.S. History Research Library under
the period 1800 – 1848: Growing Pains of the New Republic. After you've read the
speech, you will write a journal entry addressing the questions below. You will be
graded primarily on the completeness and clarity of your writing. Be sure to use the
terms listed below in your analysis.

Assignment:

Write two or three paragraphs that address each of the questions below. Each
paragraph should have at least three sentences, and you should correctly use the
terms infrastructure and demographics at least once in your analysis.

How does Porter characterize the industrial and trade potential of western New
York and the Midwest? What does he argue will help the region realize that full
potential?
