Part 1

African Americans are having an extreme likelihood of suffering from mental health

issues as compared to whit Americans. Marx (2019) indicated that 20% of African Americans

are more likely to report critical psychological distress as compared to Whites while being twice

more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia as compared to Whites. This means that African

Americans are low likelihood of receiving behavioral treatment. This indicates that disparities in

access to and utilization of mental health services persist across ethnic and racial groups in the

U.S (Connell et al., 2019). Therefore; this study focuses on examining the barriers to access and

utilization of healthcare to African American population with mental health.

In undertaking this study, a quantitative methodology will be used. The reason for using

quantitative methodology is that the study will provide quantifiable data since it will generate

objective data which can be evidently communicated through numbers and statistics.

Additionally, the quantitative methodology collects a large amount of data which obliterates bias.

The need to use quantitative methods to collect data also is due to generalization of findings if

the sample is representative of the study and if the selection process is well-designed. The

research design that will be used is survey research through the use of online questionnaires to

collect the data. The need to use a survey research design is to ensure that there is a large sample

size. The study will be conducted in State of Virginia. The reason for conducting the study in

Virginia is due to minimizing the cost and time needed to complete the study. Additionally,

19.05% of the total population of Virginia is African Americans (World Population Review,

2023). The sampling procedure that will be used is random sampling technique to ensure that

every individual in the target population has an equal chance of being selected. The sample size

is expected to be 500 respondents.
