Let’s have a skip counting by 3s from 3 to 30. Then


point at one pupil to start. The pupil who started
will point to another pupil to continue and so on
and so forth until you reach 30. Every pupil should
listen to the previous answer to be able to give his/
her own answer.
Ask: How were you able to follow the sequence of
our skip counting? Emphasize the Value of
Alertness.

Read the Problem:

Seven days before his mother’s birthday, Jake


planned to give her gifts, on the first day, he sent 1
gift. On the second day, he sent 3 gifts. On the
third day, he sent 5 gifts, and so on, how many
gifts did Jake send his mother on the seventh day?

2. Tell the students that in order to solve the


problem, we will be using a table. Allow the
students to study the illustration.
3. Upon observing the number of gifts,

His mother will receive seven gifts on the


fourth day, nine gifts on the fifth day, 11 gifts
on the sixth day, and thirteen gifts on the
seventh day.

Therefore, his mother will receive thirteen


gifts on the seventh day.

Engagement Activity)

Instructions:

 Divide the class into 3 groups.


 Each group will be given the same sequence.
 Each group will be given 5 minutes to find the
next missing terms of the given sequence.
 The first group to complete the sequence will
be the winner.

1. Find the next three terms of the sequence:

2, 5, 8, __, __, __

Solution:

2+3 = 5
5+3 = 8
8+3 = 11
11+ 3 = 14
14+3 = 17

Pattern Rule: Add 3

Therefore, the next three terms of the


sequence are 11, 14, and 17. The sequence is
2, 5, 8, 11, 14, and 17.

2. Find the next three terms of the sequence:

1, 3, 7, 15, __, __, __

Solution:

1 x 2+1= 3
3 x 2+1 = 7
7 x 2 +1 = 15
15 x 2 +1= 31
31 x 2 + 1 = 63
63 x 2+1 = 127

Pattern Rule: Multiply by 2 plus 1


Therefore, the next three terms of the
sequence are 31, 63, and 127. The sequence
is 1, 3, 7, 15, 31, 63, 127.

3. Find the next three terms of the sequence:

3, 6, 12, 24, __, __, __

Solution:

3x2=6
6 x 2 = 12
12 x 2 = 24
24 x 2 = 48
48 x 2 = 96
96 x 2 = 192

Pattern Rule: Multiply by 2

Therefore, the next three terms of the


sequence are 48, 96, and 192. The sequence
is 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 89, and 192.

2. Analysis/Modelling Activity: Show Your Solution! (Group


Presentation)

The teacher will collect the papers of each group


and she will check if the students got the correct
answer.

On the board, the selected students from their


respective group will show their solution on coming
up with their answers.

Ask the following:

In our activity, how were you able to find the


answer to the number pattern?

Expected Answers:

By determining the order of numbers if it is


ascending or descending.

Ascending order is the arrangement of


numbers from the smallest to the largest. For
example, the following numbers are in ascending
order: 3, 15, 28, 49. Descending order is an
arrangement of numbers from the largest to
the smallest. For example, the numbers 45, 32,
26, 12 are arranged in descending order.

Another is by finding the difference between two


consecutive terms.

There are problems in math that can be solve by


observing sequences and patterns.

The encircled numbers form a number sequence. A


sequence in which successive terms follow a rule
or pattern. Each number in sequence is called a
term.

Looking at the pattern of the encircled number, to


find the 2nd term add 2, for the 3rd term, add 3, for
the 4th term add 4, for the 5th term add 5, for the 6th
term add 6, and for the 7th term add 7, for the 8th
term add 8, and for the 9th term add 9. Therefore,
the rule in the sequence is (+2, +3, +4, +5, +6,
+7, +8, +9).

By studying the sequence of numbers, we can find


the rule governing the terms. The rule can tell us
what number will come next in the sequence.

Can you find the pattern or sequence used?

The numbers inside the pentagon are multiplied by


consecutive odd numbers 3, 5, 7. Starting with 3 x
3 =9, then 9 x 5 = 45, then 45 x 7 = 315, so the
missing number in the last pentagon is 2, 835 (315
x 9 = 2835)

The number series inside the hexagon uses even


numbers as factors. So, the missing number inside
the last hexagon is 768 (96 x 8 = 768).
