ACTIVITY NO. 14
FILIPINO NATIONALISM

1.) What is the significance of Filipino Nationalism?

For me nationalism is important because it is a way of showing love and respect towards a
country. Therefore, the Filipino nationalism is also important because it is the way of showing love
and respect of the Filipinos in the Philippines. It also promotes the embrace of tradition, culture and
respect in all aspects of being a Filipino. For me, it is easier for a country to develop if the people
have love, loyalty, and pride in their own country. Some examples of Filipino nationalism is the use of
the Filipino language properly and with love, enjoying the products of our own country such as the
shoes in Marikina and slippers in Laguna. For me, the patronage of Filipino products can really help
the country, it contributes a lot to the rise of our own products to other countries and also, it adds
incomes for our countrymen who feature in the manufacture of these products. And lastly, the love
and practice of cultures and traditions in the Philippines shows the significance of the Filipino
nationalism, because through it even though our time is modern now, we can still maintain some
cultures and traditions that can only be seen and found in the Philippines. Following the policies
implemented by the government to become a true Filipino citizen is also important because it proves
the existence of our nationalism.

2.) How do you show your Patriotism in our country?

As a citizen of the Philippines, we have a lot of responsibilities to fulfill, rights to be enjoyed,

laws and rules to be obeyed and above all, to give full love to the country. As I noticed, we are living
now in a modern society so as a contribution we must show our love and respect for our country. As
an ordinary citizen of the Philippines, I can show my patriotism in some small, simple, but meaningful
way. Firstly, is respect for the law of my country by simply crossing the right crossing, show respect
for nature by planting trees and disposing my garbage into the proper garbage bin, maintaining order
in our community by simply not fighting with my fellow citizens and regularly cleaning the surrounding
and of course obeying my parents to be productive and a significant part of society. Another way is to
always respect the flag which is a symbol of country. If the national anthem is being sung, I just have
to stop immediately on what I am doing, stand up, and put my hand on my left chest. Look at the
Philippine flag and sing the national anthem wholeheartedly. It is also important that we study the
Philippine history so that we can know the origin and history of the Filipino people and to be
appreciated all the heroic deeds of our heroes for achieving the freedom we enjoy today.
3.) What are the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism?

As we all know, based on their meaning, nationalism and patriotism both reflect the
relationship of the individual to his/her nation or country. That two words are often confused and are
often believed to refer to only one thing, but, we must know that there is a big difference between
nationalism and patriotism. Nationalism is a feeling that one’s own country is superior to others in
everything. On the other hand, patriotism is just a feeling of admiration for a way of life. These ideas
shows us that patriotism seems to be a passive emotion but nationalism may be violent. Patriotism is
motivated by devotion, whereas nationalism is motivated by rivalry and hatred. Nationalism is
aggressive in character, while the patriotism is founded on peace. Lots of nationalist feel their country
is superior to other whereas patriots feel their country is among the greatest and can be improved in
lot of areas. And lastly, nationalism means giving greater importance to unity in the part of culture,
including language and heritage while the patriotism refers to love of country, with an emphasis on
values and beliefs. But for me, the differences between nationalism and patriotism no longer matter,
what we should focus more attention is on how we can still show the real love, respect and loyalty to
our country in spite of all negatives that was happening in the Philippines.
