ACTIVITY NO. 14
FILIPINO NATIONALISM
As we all know, based on their meaning, nationalism and patriotism both reflect the
relationship of the individual to his/her nation or country. That two words are often confused and are
often believed to refer to only one thing, but, we must know that there is a big difference between
nationalism and patriotism. Nationalism is a feeling that one’s own country is superior to others in
everything. On the other hand, patriotism is just a feeling of admiration for a way of life. These ideas
shows us that patriotism seems to be a passive emotion but nationalism may be violent. Patriotism is
motivated by devotion, whereas nationalism is motivated by rivalry and hatred. Nationalism is
aggressive in character, while the patriotism is founded on peace. Lots of nationalist feel their country
is superior to other whereas patriots feel their country is among the greatest and can be improved in
lot of areas. And lastly, nationalism means giving greater importance to unity in the part of culture,
including language and heritage while the patriotism refers to love of country, with an emphasis on
values and beliefs. But for me, the differences between nationalism and patriotism no longer matter,
what we should focus more attention is on how we can still show the real love, respect and loyalty to
our country in spite of all negatives that was happening in the Philippines.
