Story
This Story to be honest kind of started when He, was born, atleast in this
universe. Sameer Bharti, an intelligent kid born in a peasant class of Maghar.
Maghar, Yes. The place where kabir died, it's in Uttar Pradesh. And some believe
that Uttar Pradesh is the place where people's authority is divided by their social
class, and it's their personal opinion.
The strong always prey on the week, now you can stay that way or you can
become strong to answer them, or earn your right to join them atleast. Is it right?
No, but that's how it have always been. One friend of mine said as long as there is
currency and value of something is decided based on requirement but only price
goes up with the demand- there can never be equality. As long as people will try
to play victim and prove their supremacy over the other it will never happen.
And He was a wise guy, One of my favourites to be honest.
Coming back to the story, at a young age Sameer had seen alot more than many
of us have seen till now. Born in poverty, with his mother ill and his father
addicted to alcohol he struggled for his survival. He was 13 when his mother
passed away, and even when his father used to work all day, his adiction of
alcohol and gambling always won, he would return home drunk, empty handed.
At times he would sit with him and tell him about his dreams, and that of his
sisters. His older sister Rupali wanted to be an actress and his younger sister
Vidya wanted to be a singer. And the drunk father as usual will always blame the
landlords, system, government and others.
Soon came the time when the shop that used to give them rations, stopped their
supplies. When Sameer went there and asked the reason, "Your father abused us,
and accused us of being with your sisters. I mean we used to pity you and your
family, but i guess what's born low will always stay that way. Tell your father to
stop wasting so much time and money on alcohol, gambling and prostitutes. He
thinks everyone is same as him.", The shopkeeper said.
He came home sad, his father was still not home. His elder sister was trying to
learn how to knot sweaters so she can earn a little. While the little sister was
singing. He sat in front of them and now looking at them he smiled, a smiled
coated with pain, maybe? He was cursing his destiny i am sure. Why wouldn't
he? Anyone would, then he decided to do something that he never wanted to do.
Leaving his self-respect away, he went to his uncle's house. And next day with
company of his 5 year old girl went out to beg, it just happened that he met a
young boy in that area, someone who looked rich.
"Give us something to eat brother, we are in real bad shape. Please, i will forever
be grateful.", He begged.
"Stop that, you are almost my age and begging? Don't you go to School?", the guy
asked.
"I can not, I'm not like you brother. I was born in a low class family, and as much i
want to my family can not afford private schools.", Sameer said.
"Listen Sameer, can you read English at least?", asked Vivek with a smile.
"I can, I can speak a little of English", he replied in his broken english accent.
"Great then, see Sameer the thing is i am applying for Harvard next year, and if I
can help you i will definetely put it in my essay and that might get me in there. So
it's not because of my noble heart or anything but leave begging, come to my
home and we will give you monthly rations for a whole year. How you use it, and
how will manage afterwards is totally up to you. And i will also teach you how to
read and will give you my previous year books. So does it sound like a good deal
to you?", Vivek spoke again like the businessman his father was.
Arora Bhavan, Bhuvan Arora- ceo of Arora Industries? Sameer remembered that
name from the local newspaper he was reading. It was just in english this time
around, soon Vivek came out with an old man in his 60s. The man was carrying a
bag, and another one was carried by Vivek himself. These are the books from my
previous years, Vivek offered the bag. "Ramu kaka will drop the ration at your
house just show him the way, see you at 4 tomorrow.", He added.
This encounter was just magical, he couldn't believe what was happening. Soon
his classes started, he and Vivek became good friends during the first week only,
but Sameer could clearly notice Vivek acted differently in front of his parents.
Why do you act like we are not friends with your parents around, asked Sameer
one day.
"We are friends and just because I think you will understand my situation, I am
telling you this. We as in my father's side of my family are Kshatriyas, but my
Mother is a Brahmin. But my father joined, her family and took their title too
before we came here to live. That's just how things work in society, there are
classes and higher the class more the respect, and I'm sure you already know
that. Here people see my family as a beacon of hope for all the work my parents
are trying to do, work for the good of the society. And i am the next in line, so
doesn't matter how much I want to, I can not come out publically as someone
who sees everyone as equal. That is exactly opposite to my family's beliefs. Now
when I will become the head there are some changes that i might do and maybe
things won't be the same afterwards.", He chuckled.
The classes continued, their bond grew stronger but one day when Sameer
returned home he found his sisters crying. "What happened ?", He asked. The
girls still crying, didn't answer.
"What happened?", He shouted. Still sobbing, the girl pointed to the father's
room. "What the hell did you do now?", Sameer shouted at his dad.
"Shut up you little pig, just because you are now working for those rich dogs do
you think you can shout at me? And what did i do wrong? This family lives in a
shit-hole, there is not enough money. You think only ration for one year is
enough to live a life?", He shouted back.
"I'm tired of your bullshit, so answer the damn question, you old retard. Why are
they crying? What did you do?", He shouted back angrily.
"What's wrong if the wannabe dancers dance in front of a few people? I invited a
few friends and they asked them to dance when i told them what they wanted to
do. I also got paid, and won in gambling. What's so wrong ther-", The man
vomited mid-sentence and with vomit came out blood.
He asked his sisters to leave the house with him so he will find a job after a few
months and then they can live happily but the girls denied. Angry at them and his
sisters Sameer just left- He started living in an abandoned room that existed near
one of the farms Vivek's family owned outside their village.
With passing of next few months, Sameer not only had finished the sylabous of
all the classes but also got fluent in English. He was also working at their house,
running errands, helping in cleaning up and also filling in for Vivek for the tasks
he couldn't do because he was studying for Harward. To people and Vivek's
family Sameer was a loyal underling but for Vivek he was a brother.
Thinking it would be great to have someone with Vivek as his helper and status
of royalty in foreign, The Aroras offered sammer sponshership to Harvard if he
cleared SAT and other exams with Vivek.
The results came, both were accepted into Harward class of 23'. They got all the
documents done for both kids, and Vivek was more happy than Sameer to have
him with him there. But before he left, for the last time he went home. His father
was sleeping in front of the door, the door was still empty tho.
He went inside, and what he saw broke his soul. The young girl was hanging from
a rope tied to her neck, there was blood on the sheet and the little clothes she
had on. He couldn't speak anything, he called Vivek and told him about it, but his
parents said we should not get involved in these matters. Everyone knew what
happened, he came out of the room crying. Looked at his fathers face and body in
his deathbed, and then his eyes went to the bottle. He went back in, if bottle was
here what was in the stash where he used to hide his bottles before, he went
inside -
Now he couldn't even file a FIR, it was his father who sold his girls, wait. His
other sister he remembered, he went running to his uncle and asked for help.
And that night that little girl was burnt and no one found out what had
happened.
His older sister, was married to a muslim who said she was now in Dubai with
her husband. But it was not a riddle that had to be solved, everything was clear
to him, but what could he do? It was all his father's fault, and his own for living
his family and not checking up on them, time to time even when Vivek said he
should.
He called Vivek again, I am sorry Vivek I won't be able to accompany you, I need
to fight. I can not be there in US with you there is something I need to do here in
India, and untill I do that, I won't be able to live in peace brother.
Maybe when you will be back after 4-5 years we will see about the changes you
promised back in the days. But now, I need to fight. I need to get answer I need to
be sure of what to do, I need clarity. And I wanna end what makes us different, i
wanna end this system. And I will start to fight against this unfair system. I will
fight against this unfair society. I will fight against those who mis-use their
strength. I will show them what real Equality is...
