I. Reading Comprehension: Answer the questions in Parts I1-I4 based on the passage below.

The Journey to The West

1
Long ago, in a time when gods and demons walked among mortals, a sacred mission was

entrusted to a devout monk named Tang Sanzang. He was to journey westward to retrieve ancient

scriptures that would bring enlightenment to the world. By his side travelled three unlikely disciples,

each sworn to protect him as penance for their past misdeeds. Sun Wukong, the mischievous and

powerful Monkey King, wielded his staff with unparalleled skill. Zhu Bajie, a gluttonous pig demon,

possessed strength equal to his appetite, though his courage often wavered. Sha Wujing, a local river

ogre, was a quiet but loyal ally. Together, they faced countless trials, their resolve tested at every

turn.

2
One fateful day, the sun blazed high above the travellers as they ventured deeper into the

emerald expanse of the forest, their goal ever distant yet unwavering.

3
As they pressed on, the air grew thick with the scent of blooming flowers, sweet yet cloying.

Tang Sanzang’s heart was troubled by an unspoken unease, and Wukong’s fur bristled.

4
"Master," Wukong said, his voice low, "this place reeks of trickery. Stay close."

5
Soon, a shimmering web glistened between the trees, so fine it was nearly invisible. Then, from

the shadows, six ethereal figures emerged—beautiful maidens dressed in silken robes, their

movements as graceful as the wind. They bowed low, their voices like tinkling bells.

6
"Travellers," the eldest of the Spider Sisters said, her eyes gleaming, "you must be weary

from your journey. Please, rest in our humble abode. We have prepared food and drink to revive your

strength."

7
Zhu Bajie’s eyes widened at the mention of food, but Wukong raised a warning hand. "Beware

of kindness that comes unbidden," he muttered.

8
Despite the warning, the sisters led them to a clearing, where a grand feast awaited. Piles of

glistening fruits and fragrant pastries adorned the table. Bajie lunged forward, stuffing his snout

with delicacies, ignoring Wukong's glare.

8
9
As the meal progressed, Tang Sanzang grew drowsy. "This is not ordinary food," Wukong

realized, leaping to his feet. "Show your true forms!"

10
The sisters laughed, their melodious voices turning sharp. Their elegant figures twisted and

morphed, revealing their horrific forms—each half-woman, half-giant spider. Their silk threads shot

out, ensnaring the monk and his disciples.

11
Bajie squealed in terror, dropping a bun as the spiders advanced. Sha Wujing swung his

crescent-bladed staff but found himself entangled in sticky webbing. Wukong, however, spun his

golden staff, creating a whirlwind that tore through the webs.

12
"Master, close your eyes!" Wukong shouted. With a mighty leap, he soared into the air and

brought his staff crashing down on the webs. The sisters hissed in fury, retreating momentarily.

Seizing the chance, Wukong freed his companions, and they fled deeper into the forest. Behind them,

the Spider Sisters screeched in anger, their venomous threats echoing through the trees.

13
Once they were safe, Tang Sanzang placed a hand on Wukong’s shoulder. "Your vigilance has

saved us once again, Great Sage," he said softly.

14
Wukong smirked. "There’s no time for thanks, Master. We’ve still a long road ahead, and who

knows what other perils lie in wait?"

15
With renewed determination, the group resumed their journey westward, their hearts steeled

for whatever adversities lay beyond the horizon.
