What are your expectations of the rural Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship?

My expectations are that I will be participating in a premier clinical training

opportunity serving populations like those I grew up with in Northern
California. To receive one-to-one training and mentorship from a preceptor
versed in rural practice would mean that I am one year more prepared to
serve my future patient populations. While the LIC offers this unique
experience, it comes with challenges. Namely, I will be away from … the
class/Phoenix/school administration, in a new community that I will need to
integrate into … This will require an openness to learning about the cultural
identity of these communities, and a sort of cognitive flexibility in … These
challenges notwithstanding, I believe that the benefits of participating in this
program far outweigh the potential difficulties, especially when considering
that this clerkship experience most resembles my career plans to practice in
rural locales.

Given the goals of the LIC program (listed above), provide a minimum of two
examples of how the LIC would assist you in fulfilling your career goals.

After completing my medical education and training, I anticipate practicing in

a rural community like my hometown of Paradise, California. Beginning my
journey towards independent medical practice by following the example of
rural physicians, therein cultivating a mindset geared towards approaching
the unique challenges that under-resourced communities face, will provide
critical perspective.

One of my most impactful pre-medical school experiences was working with

the Flying Samaritans. Family medicine clinic, dentistry, optometry and
pharmaceutical services were all under the same roof, and throughout the
three years I was with this organization, I worked with many of the same
patients and families. Re-capturing this experience during my medical school
training, one that played such a crucial role in my decision to pursue a career
in medicine, is of special interest to me.

Down the line, I believe this perspective will … influence my … commitment

to fostering future physicians wishing to practice in rural medicine. By …
integrating/// the principles that guide my LIC preceptors’s approach to
mentorship, I can glean tips on how to encourage future generation of
trainee physicians.

Participating in the LIC requires autonomy and flexibility. Please provide

examples of when you demonstrated independent judgement, skill and
flexibility while working in a team.

Prior to medical school, I worked several jobs. My main occupation was as a

researcher in medical imaging at the National Institute on Aging and UC San
Diego’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Here, my teams employed
magnetic resonance imaging to characterize the Alzheimer’s Disease
continuum.

As a member of these teams, I contributed to grant proposals, information

and licensing agreements, and multi-institutional research projects. Each of
these undertakings necessitated, above all else,
concise/decisive/thoughtful/meaningful/... communication

As an independent contributor, I organized massive data sets, formalized and

automated procedures for data analysis, and synthesized my findings into
several manuscripts. However, the importance of communication was still at
the forefront of my campaign towards success.

At the crux of the matter, my success as both a team member and individual
relied on my ability to relate to and interact with people from all
backgrounds. My core team at the National Institute on Aging consisted of
only 5 members representing 4 different nationalities and 3 different
continents.

Describe your rural experiences though prior rural experiences are not a
requirement (include the Personalized Active Learning block between years
1-2, scholarly project work, other life experiences, etc.).

In my 29 years of life, I have moved about 20 times. I have lived in the

desert, the forest, the mountains, the islands, and in the cities. Many of the
places I have called home are situated in rural locales (Redding, CA,
Paradise, CA, and Chico, CA, to name a few). Where I have lived has greatly
influenced how I interact with my education, and my goals post-training.
