Tutorial – 1 (WEEK :21 AUGUST 2023)
Multivariable Function, Series, Sequence, AP and GP

1. Three numbers are in arithmetic progression. Their sum is 6 and their product is 3.5.
Determine the three numbers.
2. Find the number of terms of the series 3, 5, 7,… of which the sum is 675.
3. An oil company bores a hole 40 m deep. Estimate the cost of boring if the cost is BWP
25 for drilling the first metre with an increase in cost of P2 per metre for each
succeeding metre.
4. The first, tenth and last terms of an arithmetic progression are 9, 56 and 186
respectively. Find (a) the number of terms, (b) the 70th term and (c) the sum of all
the terms
5. Find the sum of all the numbers between 0 and 123 which are exactly divisible by 3.
6. The seventh term of an arithmetic series is 11.5 and the eleventh term is 17.5.
Determine the sixteenth term.
7. In an AP, given 𝑎𝑛 = 4, 𝑑 = 2, 𝑆𝑛 = −14. Find n and a.
8. The first and the last term of an AP are 17 and 350 respectively. If the common
difference is 9, how many terms are there and what is their sum?
9. Show that 𝑎1 , 𝑎2 , . . . . , 𝑎𝑛 , . .. form an Ap where 𝑎𝑛 is defined as 𝑎𝑛 = 9 − 5𝑛. Find the
sum of the first 15 terms.
10. If the sum of the first n terms of an AP is 4𝑛 − 𝑛2 , what is the first term (that is 𝑆1)?
What is the sum of first two terms? What is the second term? Similarly find the 3rd ,
the 10th and the nth terms.
11. A manufacturer of TV sets produced 600 sets in the third year and 700 sets in the
seventh year. Assuming that the production increases uniformly by a fixed number
every year, find (a) the production in the first year, (b) the production in the 10th
year and (c) total production in first 7 years.
12. How many terms of the AP : 24, 21, 18, …… must be taken so that their sum is 78?
13. If the population of Botswana is 2.25 million and is increasing at 3 % per annum,
what will be the population in 5 years time?
14. A drilling machine is to have 8 speeds ranging from 120 rev/min to 1200 rev/min. If
the speeds form a geometric progression determine their values, each correct to the
nearest whole number.
15. Find the sum to infinity of the geometric series 3, -3/5, 3/25, ,. . . . .
16. A hire tool firm finds that their net return from hiring tools is decreasing by 7.5 %
per annum. If their net gain on a certain tool this year is £350, find the possible total
of all future profits from this tool (assuming the tool lasts for ever).
17. If BWP 2500 is invested at compound interest of 5 % per annum, determine (a) the
value after 10 years, (b) the time, correct to the nearest year, it takes to reach more
than BWP 3000.
18. Find the sum of the first 7 terms of the geometric series 3, -10.5, 36.75 ,… (correct to
4 significant figures).
19. If a, b, c and d are in G.P. Show that (𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 + 𝑐 2 )(𝑏 2 + 𝑐 2 + 𝑑 2 ) = (𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏𝑐 + 𝑐𝑑)2 .
20. Find a G.P. for which sum of the first two terms is −4 and the fifth terms is 4 times
the third term.
21. If the first and the nth term of a G.P. are a and b, respectively, and if P is the product
of n terms, prove that 𝑃2 = (𝑎𝑏)𝑛 .
22. Dimpho opens an account that pays compound interest annually. The annual balance
for this investment at the end of the 4th and 5th year are BWP 1260 and BWP 1335.6.
How much will this investment be worth after 10 years?
23. Metsi wants to invest her saving at a bank. Her new account has a compound interest
rate of 6.5%. she wants to use the money to buy a car in 36 months (3 years). How
much should she invest if she wants to reach BWP 35000 in that time frame.
