FASHION: AN INDUSTRY CONTROLLED BY MEN

Women are the primary consumers of fashion, but
are they the ones who control the fashion industry?
Almost ninety percent of graduating students from
top fashion programmes at the most prestigious
design schools are women, but there are more male
designers working in the fashion industry. Every
year, male designers receive more awards than
female designers and most of the fashion designer labels have men as their heads.
Is it because men are more talented and creative? Is it because they are better in
running the industry? Or is it because the fashion industry has a gender equality
problem?

It is really interesting that men, as designers, create an identity for women by

deciding on what women should or shouldn’t wear and how they should or shouldn’t
look. Ultimately, they are the ones who create the beauty ideals that greatly affect
the lives of women. Is this because male designers understand a woman’s needs
better than a female designer?

Although people are becoming more aware about body image issues and eating
disorders nowadays, we still see many unnaturally thin and unhealthy-looking
models on the runway. Some people think that these models are dazzling, but
others believe that they create a negative body image for women. So, why don’t
designers, mostly male, choose models with a more realistic body shape and
encourage better eating and health for women? Do women really want and need
unattainable looks and unhealthy habits just to fit in the reality that is created by
the fashion industry?

Fortunately, more and more female designers are taking leading roles in fashion
these days. They are trying hard to change the absurd beauty ideals that are
imposed on women. They do this by choosing models who are not stick-thin, but
muscular models who show beauty and strength. More female designers leading
big fashion houses will definitely be a breath of fresh air in the industry and the
lives of millions of women all around the world.
