Introduction to Making Multimedia

 Stages of a multimedia project.

o Planning and costing

o Designing and producing

o Testing

o Delivering

 Planning and costing:

o The needs of a project are analyzed by outlining its messages and objectives.

o A plan that outlines the required multimedia expertise is prepared.

o A graphic template, the structure, and navigational system are developed.

o A time estimate and a budget are prepared.

o A short prototype or proof-of-concept is prepared.

 Designing and producing:

o The planned tasks are performed to create a finished product.

o The product is revised, based on the continuous feedback received from the client.

 Testing:

o The program is tested to ensure that it meets the objectives of the project, works on the
proposed delivery platforms, and meets the client requirements.

 Delivery: The final project is packaged and delivered to the end user.

 Requirements for a Multimedia Project

 Hardware

 Software

 Creativity and organizational skills

 Hardware

 Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows.

o An easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI).

 The Macintosh platform is better suited for multimedia production than the Windows platform.

o The Apple hardware platforms are better equipped to manage both sound and video
editing.

 Television set-top box

o Sega , Nintendo, or Sony

 Peripherals

o Monitors, disk drives, scanners, and network equipments, audio hardware, video
hardware

 Platform-independent delivery of multimedia

 Cross-platform compatibility can consume amount of time as prepare for delivery

 Software

 Software tools are divided into three parts

 Creating multimedia elements

o Word processors

o Image and sound editors

 Capturing screen images, translating between file formats, and editing

resources

 Multimedia authoring tools

 Tools for Internet multimedia

Multimedia authoring tools

There are the tools which provide the capability for creating a complete multimedia presentation,
including interactive user control, are called authoring tools.

Multimedia authoring tools provide the important framework you need for organizing and editing the
elements of multimedia like graphics, sounds, animations and video clips.

Authoring software provides an integrated environment for binding together the content and functions
of your project.

It enables the developer to create edit, and import data.

Types of Authoring Tools

Card-and page based tools.

Icon Based, event driven tools.

Time based tools.

1. Card and page based tools

In these authoring systems, elements are organized as pages of a book or a stack of cards.

Card and page based authoring systems provide a simple and easily understood metaphor for
organizing multimedia elements

Best used when the bulk of your content consists of elements that can be viewed individually.

It contains media objects such as buttons, text fields, and graphic objects.

It provides a facility for linking objects to pages or cards.

2. Icon based event driven tools

Icon based event driven tools provide a visual programming approach to organize and prsent
multimedia.

With icon based programs you use symbols in a flow chart scheme.

Each icon represents a particular event.

Best to use when you have a message with a beginning and an end.

For example: the wait icon stops the process until the user click the mouse button or presses a key
or a specific amount of time passes.

Flowchart can be built by dragging appropriate icons from a library and then adding the content.

3. Time based tools.

Time based tools are best suited for messages with a beginning and an end.

Some Time based tools facilitate navigation and interactive control.

Macromedia’s director and flash are time based development environments.

Has the ability to develop an application like a movie and good for creating animations

Requirements for a Multimedia Project:

 Creativity and Organizational Skills

 Before beginning a multimedia project, you must first develop a sense of its scope and content.

 The most precious asset you can bring to the multimedia is your creativity.

 It is very difficult to learn creativity. Some might say that it’s impossible, one is born with it.

 In a multimedia project, being creative implies knowledge of hardware and software.

 Creativity and Organizational Skills

 It is essential to develop an organized outline detailing the skills, time, budget, tools and
resources needed for the project.

 Assets such as graphics, sound and the like should be continuously monitored throughout the
project’s execution.

 A standardized file-naming procedure should be followed for precise organization and rapid
retrieval.
