*(1) Consider the following function defined on R2 :
( 2 2
xy(x y )
x2 +y 2
, (x, y) 6= (0, 0)
f (x, y) =
0, (x, y) = (0, 0)
Show that fxy and fyx exist on R2 but fxy (0, 0) 6= fyx (0, 0).
(2) Let u = f (x1 , . . . , xn ) be a function of n variables. Suppose that partial derivatives of f of
any order exist and are continuous on Rn .
(i) Let m1 , . . . , m` be a sequence of numbers in {1, . . . , n}. Show that for any 1  j  ` 1,
fxm1 ···xmj xmj+1 ···xm` = fxm1 ···xmj+1 xmj ···xm` .

(ii) Show that fxm1 ···xm` can be calculated in any order.

In this problem you are allowed to use Clairaut’s theorem for functions of n variables: Let
u = f (x1 , . . . , xn ) be a function of n variables defined on Rn . If fxi xj and fxj xi exist and are
continuous on Rn , then fxi xj = fxj xi .
(3) Let E(x, y) be a function of two variables which is defined near (0, 0). Show that the following
two statements are equivalent:
(i) E(x, y) = "1 (x, y) · x + "2 (x, y) · y where "1 (x, y) ! 0 and "2 (x, y) ! 0 as (x, y) ! (0, 0).
(ii) pE(x,y) ! 0 as (x, y) ! (0, 0).

(Hint: (i) ) (ii) is direct. For (ii) ) (i), consider the expression
E(x, y) E(x, y)
E(x, y) = sign(x) · x + sign(y) · y.
|x| + |y| |x| + |y|
E(x,y) E(x,y)
Show that both "1 (x, y) := |x|+|y|
sign(x) and "2 (x, y) := |x|+|y|
sign(y) approach 0 as (x, y) !
