LESSON 1

Graphic designers should have an understanding of the different image type, their limitation, and
benefits

 Types of Images
 Line art
- The resolution is higher than the standard resolution of 300 dpi (Dot per inch)
- dpi is used to measure the resolution of an image on screen and in print
- This are scanned, traced, etc. Pixel based.
 Grayscale
- Their image result of the density of ink from 0% t0 100% black ink. (Also pixel based)
 Duotone
- If there are three solid colors (Tritone), four solid colors (Quadtone). [Pixel based]
 RGB
- Used primarily for everything that is displayed on screens and monitors.
- Red Green Blue are assigned a value between 0 and 256. (Pixel base)
 CMYK
- Image type used for commercial printing. (Pixel based)
CMYK stand for Cyan, Magenta, yellow and black – which are used to create all other color on
a printing press by combining them.
 Vector
- Only image type that is non-pixel based and so, it is resolution independent.
- It can be scaled to any size without affecting its quality.

Image type Description File format Resolution (dpi)

Line art Has only two values; Black and white BMP, JPG, TIFF, 600-1 200
EPS
Grayscale Has up to 256 shades of gray BMP, JPG, TIFF, 300
EPS
Duotone Printed with two solid colors EPS 300
RGB Generates 16.7 million colors by combining red, GIF, JPG, PNG 72
green, blue
Intended for screen and monitors
CMYK Generate other colors by combining the four ink TIFF, EPS 300
colors
Intended for printing
Vector Created from mathematically defined lines and curve EPS Resolution
Can be scaled without affecting its quality independent

LESSON 2 IMAGE ADJUSTMENT

 Levels tool
- A tool that can adjust the brightness of an images
- Useful for underexposed photos
 Underexposed - it means that an image was exposed to too LITTLE LIGHT and so it became
dark
 Overexposed – means there is TOO MUCH LIGHT on an image, resulting a very bright photo
 Clone Stamp Tools
- This will copy any part of the photo that you will set as your source for cloning
- For removing distracting or unwanted elements.
 Sharpening
- Sometimes you will have images that are slightly blurry that need to be sharpened
- unsharp mask tool; tool in Photoshop that lets you sharpened blurry photos
 Cropping (Crop tool)
- refers to reducing the size by removing undesirable or unnecessary elements of an image
- If you want to focus on one subject, you can always crop the image, retaining only the desired
elements.

LESSON 3 RETOUCHING TECHNIQUES

 Red eye tool
- for fixing red eyes
- red eyes usually happen when the photo taken where there is very low light. The eyes turn red as
a reaction to the flash of the camera
 Retouching face
 Patch tool – best for retouching skin tone (usually for eyebags)
 use smart Blur this will slightly blur an image For smoother skin.
 Replacing Colors
- You can use The Hue/Saturation menu in photoshop to change the color of a subject.

LESSON 4 CREATING FOCAL POINT

 A focal point will lead the attention of the viewers to where you want it to be. It is important to have
focal points to make your subject stands out or put emphasis on an object
 Background or foreground blurring
- in photography it is common to see a sharp subject with a blurred background this is called Depth
of field
 Adding spotlight
- If you do not wish to blur the other people but would like to make them unnoticeable, you can
add spotlight on the center.
- Use the Elliptical marquee tool to add circular section for spotlight
 Applying section
- similar to adding spotlight with sectioning but no circular selection.
- it’s just straight section that reveals the area you want the viewer to focus on
- Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, will make a rectangular selection.
 Fading section
- if you want simpler effects that will shift the eye of the viewer, you may also opt to do fading
- it will be similar to applying sections but instead of filling with solid colors and reducing opacity
- Gradient tool will be used to create the fading effect,
- Foreground to transparent will creat a gradient using the foreground color you have selected to
be transparent
