Audio Unit 1
The Weber 1es1, described in ChapLer 2, can be performed by using lhe bone-conduction v1bra1or
of an audiometer. The \'lbra1or is placed on the midlinc of 1hc skull, just as for forehead bone-
conduction resting, and the level of the tone is raised until i1 is above the pacicnt's hearing tluesh-
old. Tones of differenl frequencies are then presented, and patients arc asked to state whether they
hear them in the left ear, in the right ear, or in the midline. Midline sensations are sometimes
described as being heard in both ears or as unla1eralized.
It is expected that, during the \Vcber 1cst, 10111cs will be referred 10 1he poorer-hearing ear in
a conductive- loss, to the better ear in a sensory/neural loss, and to the midline in synm1etrical
losses or nor,nal bearing. II has been suggesLed that Lhe audiometric Weber test be used to deter-
mine which ear 10 mask during bone-conduction testing. This notion is not encouraged here, as
there are several reasons why the \,Vcbcr may be misleading. \'11eber results help in the confirma-
tion or denial of re.wits obtained from standard pure-tone audiometry, and the probahlc results
on this test are illustrated in all of the audiograms in this book.
