3.5. Battery Management System

3.5.1. Battery Management System Framework
The protection and monitoring functions of the battery system are implemented by the
BMS battery management system, which is divided into three levels of management: BMU,
BCU, and BAU. The BMS system functions as follows:
BMU (module level, built into the battery module): monitors the voltage, temperature,
and total voltage of individual battery cells, and transmits the above information in real-time
to the higher-level BMS through CAN protocol, which can control the voltage balance of
individual battery cells.
BCU (Battery Cluster Level, Built in High Voltage Box): detects the total voltage and
current of the entire cluster of batteries, and transmits the above information in real-time to
the higher-level BMS through CAN protocol. It can display the capacity and health status of
the battery during charging and discharging, predict power, and calculate internal resistance.
Control the balance of voltage between relay switches and battery cluster level units.
BAU (system level, provided when multiple clusters of batteries are connected in
parallel): Collecting information from lower level BCUs, it can estimate the remaining

LEOCH INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY LIMITED

15
Version:V2.0

capacity and health status of batteries in real time. Communicate with upper and external
systems through RS-485, CAN, Modbus TCP/IP.
3.4.2. Battery Management System Functions
1. Analog measurement function: capable of real-time measurement of individual cell
voltage, temperature, battery module voltage, battery cluster terminal voltage, current and
other parameters. Ensure the safe, reliable, and stable operation of batteries, guarantee the
required service life of individual batteries, and meet the optimization control requirements
for the operation of individual batteries and battery packs.
2. Online SOC diagnosis: Based on real-time data collection, multiple segmented
processing methods are used to establish an expert mathematical analysis diagnostic model,
and the remaining SOC of each battery is measured online. At the same time, intelligent
calibration of SOC prediction is carried out based on battery discharge current and
environmental temperature, providing battery remaining capacity and reliable usage time that
are more in line with changing loads.
3. Battery system operation alarm function: When the battery system encounters
overvoltage, under-voltage, overcurrent, high temperature, low temperature, communication
abnormality, BMS abnormality and other states during operation, it can display and report
alarm information (within 300ms).
4. Battery system protection function: Display and report protection information (within
300ms) in case of serious overvoltage, under-voltage, overcurrent (short circuit), abnormal
temperature rise rate, voltage mutation and other abnormal faults that may occur during
operation of the battery. Quickly cut off the battery circuit through the high-voltage control
unit, isolate the fault point, timely output sound and light alarm information, fire linkage, etc.,
to ensure safe and reliable operation of the system.
5. Communication function: The battery management system should have the function
of exchanging information with EMS, PCS, other management level battery management
systems, and have the function of exchanging information with fire protection systems,
thermal management systems, and other equipment.
6. Thermal management function: Through linkage control with the liquid cooling unit,
the thermal management function of the battery pack is achieved; If the temperature reaches

LEOCH INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY LIMITED

16
Version:V2.0

the set danger value, the battery management system will automatically link with the system
protection mechanism to promptly cut off the battery circuit and ensure system safety.
7. Self diagnosis and fault tolerance function: The battery management system adopts
advanced self fault diagnosis and fault tolerance technology, which has self checking
function for the module's own software and hardware. Even if internal faults or device
damage occur, it will not affect the safe operation of the battery. It will not cause the energy
storage system to malfunction or even lead to battery damage or malignant accidents due to
battery management system failures.
8. BMS has self diagnostic function, which can diagnose faults such as communication
interruption between BMS and the outside world, abnormal internal communication of BMS,
and abnormal analog acquisition, and can report them to the local monitoring system.
9. Balance function: Passive balance.
10. Operation parameter setting function: BMS operation parameters should be able to
be modified remotely or locally through BMS or energy storage station monitoring system,
and some parameter modifications require password confirmation.
11. Local operating status display function: BMS can display various operating statuses
of the battery system locally, such as system status, analog information, alarm and protection
information, etc.

3.6. Design of Automatic Fire Protection System

3.6.1. Fire Protection Plan Description

The automatic fire protection system can be divided into aerosol fire extinguishing
system, explosion-proof exhaust system, and emergency water spray. When the battery loses
control of heat and causes combustible gas leakage, the explosion-proof exhaust system
responds in a timely manner to exhaust and exchange air; When a fire occurs, the fire
extinguishing system quickly intervenes to detect, alarm, and extinguish the fire; If the fire
spreads or reignites, and the fire extinguishing system cannot control the fire, emergency
water sprinklers can be connected for emergency disposal to prevent serious consequences
such as explosions and fires
3.6.2. Working principle of fire protection system

LEOCH INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY LIMITED

17
Version:V2.0

When the smoke or temperature detector inside the battery container alarms, the sound
and light alarm outside the battery container will immediately activate to remind personnel to
respond; When smoke and temperature detectors simultaneously detect a fire or manually
activate the release station, the sound and light alarm and alarm bell will sound to remind on-
site personnel to evacuate. The gas fire extinguishing controller will delay for 30 seconds
(adjustable) and send a 24V electrical signal to the fire extinguishing device, which will start,
implement fire extinguishing, and provide feedback signals. If the gas emergency stop button
at the cabin door is pressed during the 30 second delay period, the gas spraying operation will
be canceled and the system will reset.
If the fire spreads or reignites, and the fire extinguishing system cannot control the fire,
emergency water sprinklers can be connected for emergency disposal to prevent serious
consequences such as explosions and fires. The logic control flowchart is shown in the
following figure.

3.7. Design of Intelligent Liquid Cooling Temperature Control

System
The 314Ah battery cells used in this scheme are selected based on the data at the end of
their lifespan to ensure the thermal management needs of the entire system lifecycle.
According to calculations, for each 5.015MWh battery container in this plan, one liquid
cooling unit with a cooling power of 60kW is selected, with a maximum power consumption
of 35.1kW.
The liquid cooling unit and battery module are connected by pipelines, with the primary
pipeline (main pipeline) made of stainless steel and the secondary and tertiary pipelines made
of polymer nylon material. By using the front-end ball valves at the inlet and outlet of the
secondary tube to ensure the uniformity of flow between clusters, and by changing the
diameter of the front-end joints of the transistor to ensure the uniformity of flow among each
battery module in the cluster, the thermal management goal of achieving a system
temperature difference of ≤ 5 ℃ is ultimately achieved.
The thermal simulation results of the battery container are shown below:

3.8. Dehumidification system design

This plan is configured with 8 60W semiconductor dehumidification modules for each
battery container to provide a suitable temperature and humidity environment inside the
battery container, ensuring the service life of the battery container. The product adopts
semiconductor refrigeration dehumidification method, actively sucking the humid air in the
enclosed space into the dehumidification duct under the action of the fan. The water vapor in
the air is condensed into water after passing through the semiconductor refrigeration
mechanism, and then discharged through the water conduit, which can achieve a good
dehumidification effect. By reducing the moisture content in the air, both relative and
absolute humidity can be lowered simultaneously, with almost no increase in temperature or
negative effects caused by temperature differences. This fundamentally eliminates or reduces
the occurrence of accidents, and does not accelerate the aging of cabinet components and
cabinets due to high temperatures. The dehumidification device has changed the passive
