ABSTRACT

The study investigated of the performance of students in mathematics in public and

private secondary schools in Ilesa west local government area of Osun state. The study
was guided by three research questions. Also two null hypotheses were formulated and
tested at 0.05 levels of significance. The study employed descriptive design. The
population comprised of all mathematics students in public and private Secondary
Schools in Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun state. The study sampled Eighty
(80 students and randomly drawn from four public secondary schools and four private
secondary schools. They were selected by simple random sampling technique. One type
of questionnaire were designed which is students’ questionnaire, which was administered
appropriately. The instrument was validated by a fellow researcher for comments
correction after which they were corrected and passed on to the project supervisor. The
reliability of the questionnaires was established using test — retest Reliability method
which was found to be 0.70. The chi-square statistics was used to test hypotheses raised.
The study showed that Testing the first hypothesis, it was found out that there is
statistically significance difference in the performance of students between private and
public secondary schools in mathematics in existing local government area of Ilesa West
Local Government area of Osun State. Testing the second hypothesis, it was found out
that there is no significance relationship between school environment and the academic
performance of both private and public schools student in mathematics in secondary
