CONVENTIONAL FISHING Internal/External Engagement Tools
TECHNICAL UNIT
Type B™ Casing Spear
Product Family No. H12609
Introduction
The Type B™ Casing Spear is designed to re-
trieve casing sizes from 4-1/2" to 13-3/8". It may be
set for right-hand or left-hand release (1/4 turn at
the tool) and is easily field dressed to change the
setting direction. The enclosed slip segments are
well protected when running inside the fish to the
desired operating depth. The releasing mechanics
makes for a superior in-line spear when setting un-
derwater casing patches. When equipped with al-
ternate vertical slip segments, this Spear may be
used to transmit rotational torque when used to
back off casing or release mudline hangers in
some sub-sea wellhead applications.

Features/Benefits
• Simple construction
• Can be easily field dressed for right or left-hand
release
• Rugged design, well suited for jarring
• Carburized slip teeth bite over large surface
area minimizing casing damage
• Optional slips with vertical teeth for backing-off
• Easily dressed for alternate casing sizes
• Easily released and reset
Description
The mandrel and slips are the load carrying
members of the tool. The mandrel has two integral
slots which determine right or left-hand release, to
house the lug. The catch position is achieved when
the mandrel is rotated and an upward pull then ap-
plied through the workstring. As the mandrel is
drawn upward, the matching taper on the slips and
mandrel forces the slips to expand outward (con-
tacting the fish ID). The greater the overpull, the
greater the bite on the fish. To release, the mandrel
is bumped down and rotated so that the slips re-
tract up the mandrel. The friction blocks extend
against the casing ID and allow the lower body to
be held stationary as the mandrel is rotated the
1/4 turn necessary to engage or release the tool. Drawing No. 948-843-00P03
