VI
CHAPTER – 1
INTRODUCTION

1
Technology has influenced almost all the sectors from the past few
years, including education. In past years, education was only associated
with offline learning and school-based teaching. But with time, there is
a change in the education system and the way students learn. The world
has witnessed a revolutionary way to impart education after the
invention of the Education Apps. It has accommodated a new pattern
of learning for kids, teachers, parents and students. It has changed the
conventional learning methods. Students nowadays have all the
instruments needed to enhance their learning through educational apps
and e-learning platforms. Now, students are not confined within an area
to learn sitting among other students. They can educate themselves by
sitting in their homes and by attending virtual classes. Day by day,
technocrats are working on improving the performance of Education
Apps. So, it is possible that in the future, e-learning, Education Apps,
and online classes will become the mode of learning.
Educational apps have made learning easily accessible to all with just
a click of a button. The Educational apps have worked as a bridge
between kids and teachers and between parents and teachers. With the
arrival of Education Apps for kids, education has become fun and
interactive among all ages of students. In this modern age of
digitalization, Education apps play a crucial role in students’ learning
process both inside and outside the classroom, making it more
interactive, immersive and engaging.

2
Education Apps for kids can make them learn in an easier way with the
help of animation, pictures, videos rather than text and descriptive
information. Thus, they can enjoy learning, and their interest in studies
will also increase. Students will no longer find studies boring and
burdensome; instead, their learning will become fun. The Education
Apps for students are a fantastic way of keeping teaching methods
fresh. Educational apps are revolutionizing the world of education.
These are designed in such a way that they align with the processes of
children’s learning and development. These Education Apps also
promote active, meaningful, fun-based and socially interactive
learning. In this way, Education Apps add a great touch of value to the
learners.

3
The Covid-19 had resulted in the closing of schools all across the
world and thus, has further brought with itself a great momentum for
the accelerated adoption of digital learning and education. As a result,
e-learning methods have been adopted fastly by teachers, students and
parents. The reasons for the acceptability of e-learning through
Education Apps are that online classes are easy to use, provide learning
flexibility, no physical interaction, and a controllable environment.
However, despite its multiple advantages, there are quite a few
limitations of e-learning, such as social isolation, connectivity issues,
etc. Education Apps have never been adopted and accepted as real
learning or the formal mode of education before this ongoing
pandemic. Now, at the pandemic crisis, most educational institutions
are exploring various e-learning platforms such as education apps for
kids, online classrooms, etc. Also, teachers and educators are exploring
different e-teaching software to bring maximum possible ease for their
students.

4
The BYJU’S Learning App provides students with a holistic learning
experience. Students across regions can access the study material
online created by the best teachers for free by downloading the BYJU’S
App. Student study journey is planned and executed at the deepest level
with experts, teachers and tools like videos, interactive animations,
quizzes and assessments. The BYJU’S App integrates lessons and
assessments along with analysis and recommendations, personalized to
suit each student’s learning style. It is one of the most loved apps for
students across age groups.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS

“I believe when you take sessions in auditoriums,

you’re creating a kind of fan following. You can’t do a
math class in a stadium. It has to be a math
performance.”

Byju Raveendran, the founder of the ed-tech giant, was born in

1981 in a village in Kerala. Raveendran did a B.Tech in mechanical
engineering from a government engineering college in Kerala. He was
initially working in a UK based shipping company as an engineer. He
became quite famous among his group of friends when he helped them
crack the IIM entrance exam (CAT) using his shortcuts. He himself
achieved a hundred percentile in the entrance test. He then started
taking mathematical workshops for which he did not charge initially.
In 2009, he started to record his videos of the workshop he conducted.
In 2011, along with his wife, Divya Gokulnath, he founded Byju’s. In
2021, he was awarded the ‘Forbes India Leadership Award (FILA)
Entrepreneur for the Year’.

them the freedom to learn at their own pace.

We’ve created students who are addicted to learning,

and therein lies the secret to our success.

Therefore, it has solved a huge problematic scenario where a student

has to pay the fees demanded by the tutor. In most of the cases, the
student either cannot afford the fee to attend these classes or feels
unsatisfied by the teaching quality of the tutors. Thus, e-learning has

CHAPTER-2
LITERATURE
REVIEW

24
A scale of previous studies was used to assess the degree of innovation,
“A literature review is a text of scholarly paper, which includes the
current knowledge, substantive findings, as well as theoretical and
methodological contribution to a particular topic. Literature review are
secondary sources, do not report new or original experimental work.”
Some of the literature reviews related to the study are:
● Dr. Sangeeta Mukherjee (March 2020): The technological
innovations that are adopted by BYJU’S are highly helpful to students
to understand basic and complex concepts in a very short time. The
BYJU’S App uses web-based learning, visual learning, and
personalized learning which altogether provide an immersive learning
experience to students. One of the findings is that the advertisement
claims that the app makes an interactive learning experience. The
premium subscription is a bit costly for the average earning Indian
consumer.

● RR Chavan, Abhishek Shukla (August, 2018): Using

technology as an enabler and unique combination of media and content
adopted by BYJU’S helps it to create a learning app for students. This
paper also discusses the approach of e-entrepreneurship taken by the
founder of BYJU’S to start Ed- tech Company to serve maximum
students through a digital platform. Also, the emerging digital
technology will provide new opportunities to a new venture in different
business sectors.
25
● Mohd Shoaib Ansari (January 2017): Learning applications
are expanding among students. Found that portable learning
applications can be extremely helpful in the advanced education
condition. Moreover, the outcomes appeared that the students have
sufficient information and attention to utilize portable innovation and
the Web in their instructive condition. Mobile App for learning is
popular in higher education in India. Furthermore, it is also found that
student is aware of mobile Apps which provides learning contents.
● Financial Times (December 2019): Found that, BYJU’s has
around 3 million subscribers who are school going students. BYJU’S
has made India an emerging ground for testing the Ed-tech industry. It
is estimated by KPMG and Google that India’s online learning sector
will reach $2 billion by 2021.
● The Indian Express (April 2020): After nationwide lockdown
in India, there was an increase of 150% in new enrollment on the
BYJU’s App. BYJU’s has also started free live classes on its platform
for class 4 to class 12 students in India.
● Business Insider, India (December 2019): Found that
BYJU’s secret of success is engagement and effectiveness. By adding
interactive videos and media on its platform, it has made the learning
fun and interactive. In 2018, BYJU’s spend Rs.185.5 Cr on advertising.

26
● Forbes (October 2019): found that the backbone of BYJUS app
personalized learning is its rich learning profile. Graphs of over one
lakh concepts and relationships that have been created to design
personal learning journeys- videos, questions, adaptive flows, quizzes,
flashcards, correctional learning videos, and so on. Additionally, the
learning content is also tagged to multiple other properties and
parameters. This content is tagged at the sub micro concept level which
helps the algorithms create a smooth learning curve for the student so
that they feel challenged, yet motivated
● IBEF (April 2019): Online education in India is growing fast and
many students have access to smart phones, computers, and the
internet. Integrating technology is the need of the hour since everything
is going digital. India has the largest K-12 students in the world with
over 260 million students. Also, there is a rise in low-cost smart phones,
accessibility to the internet among the students is increasing.
● Dr. BADA, Steve Olusegun (December 2015): Found that
process of learning is individual to the learner. The learner tries to relate
each and everything to the real world what he or she has learned.
Constructivism refers to self-learning and knows how to learn things
more conceptually. It emphasized critical thinking and decision making

27
CHAPTER-3
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY

28
Research is done for collecting the information that helps to solve
certain problems effectively. It is a frame work with a specific logic
from the researcher to find out a reasonable solution for a problem. It
is a step-by-step activity which needs to be accurate and should have a
reasonable solution for a problem.
The sample population includes the respondents who are the customers
of BYJU’S or are aware of the offerings of BYJU’S in India. The
sample size of 150 was selected. The samples were chosen by using the
purposive sampling technique, which is a non-probability sampling
technique, because the exact population size is unknown, and the
accessibility to all the customers is difficult. The survey method of data
collection was used in this research. The primary data was collected
using a structured questionnaire.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

E-learning is growing at a rapid pace in India as more and more
institutions, teachers and students are using online platform for
studying. Indian teachers use both traditional and modern methods for
teaching. Blended-learning which uses both the methods is gaining
popularity. Slowly but steadily, Indian classrooms are becoming smart.
Students are trained in technology right from the primary level. As
internet and allied technologies are getting cheaper and more
widespread, more students can lay their hands on e-learning. Byju’s is
one of the most important platforms in Indian education system. They
provide a host of services like aid for competitive exam preparation,

29
school-level study materials, home learning program, etc. Byju’s, one
of the most valued edtech companies in the world, has played a major
role in transforming Indian education scenario. This paper helps to
investigate and get a clear picture of the possibility of Byju’s App in
enhancing personalized learning. The findings of the study will also be
useful to understand the performance of BYJU’S app and how far it
transforms the traditional scenario of learning, by incorporating
modern methods of E-learning techniques.

CONCLUSION

“We’ve created students who are addicted to learning, and

therein lies the secret to our success”
-Byju Raveendran

As a startup, the concept of BYJU’S is quite innovative and has earned

massive success in the industry. The Company along with its presence
in the Indian market has captured and established its presence in the
Middle East as well. The main objective of the ed-tech giant is to bridge
the gap between the Indian education system and help students fall in
love with what they learn. It is creating a place where students can take
the initiative of learning themselves rather than being spoon-fed. The
Byju’s App is known for its self-paced learning experience by enabling
the students crack down difficult concepts. The app uses a host of
modern techniques like web-based learning, visual graphics, video-
based instruction, etc. to provide an immersive learning experience.
These innovations are highly helpful for the students to understand
basic concepts and enable them to prepare for exams. From this study,
it is clear that BYJU’S app has transformed Indian education scenario.
