CASE STUDY
OPTIMIZING MEDITECH'S CORPORATE NETWORK
The Objectives
Background
Nowadays, it is important for company to have efficient and reliable enterprise network
for their daily operation.
Scenario
Current Topology
Details:
1. All devices are on a single VLAN (VLAN 1).
2. Inter-VLAN routing is not implemented.
3. No link aggregation is in place between switches.
4. DHCP is configured on Router0 for the entire network.
5. IPv6 is not implemented.
6. All switches are layer 2 switches.
7. No security measures are in place.
8. No redundancy or high-availability features are implemented.
Your Task
As a network consultant, you need to analyse this topology and suggest improvements
in the following areas:
1. Switching concepts
o Implement VLANs to segregate traffic
o Optimize switch port usage
2. VLAN and Inter-VLAN routing
o Design an efficient VLAN structure. Consider Servers to be in a specific
VLAN.
o Implement inter-VLAN routing
3. EtherChannel
o Identify where link aggregation can improve performance and
redundancy
4. DHCPv4 and DHCPv6
o Optimize DHCP configuration for both IPv4 and IPv6
o Implement DHCP snooping for security (*only if the switch security has
been covered)
5. Reliability and Redundancy
o Implement redundant links and devices to eliminate single points of
failure
o Consider technologies like Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) or its variants
Additionally, consider overall network security, scalability, and performance in your
proposed solutions. Addressing plan will be considered as a value add to your report.
Deliverables
1. A revised network topology diagram, together with IP address design.
2. Explanation of proposed changes and their benefits.
3. Basic configuration snippets for key devices.
4. Justification for how your changes improve security, scalability, performance,
and reliability/redundancy.
