WORKSHOP #1586
FEATURE PROBLEM
If ax2 – 6x2 – ax + 9x + 4a – 24 = bx, what is the value of b ?

___________________

STRATEGY
Think about which terms you would need to cancel out to get only one fixed value for b. What would a have to equal
for those terms to cancel out?

STRATEGY/CONCEPT:
EXPONENTS
While there are many rules regarding exponents, the three that are most commonly tested are the additive law, sub-
tractive law, and multiplicative law:
Additive law: ax × ay = ax + y
Subtractive law: ax/ay = ax – y
Multiplicative law: (ax)y = axy
Also remember that when you have common bases on both sides of an equation, you can compare the exponents
directly, and any number taken to the 0 power is equal to 1.
