EXPERIMENT NO. 4
CHEMICAL REACTIONS

PROCEDURES & OBSERVATIONS

A. Synthesis or Direct Union

1. Mix 1.0 gram sulfur with 1.0 gram iron filings in an evaporating dish and
heat over a hot plate.

Result: The Iron fillings and Sulfur powder reacted and

formed a Black odorous hard solid substance.
Give the balanced chemical equation for the above reaction.

Fe (s) + S (s) → FeS (s); (balanced)

2. Place a 2 cm piece of magnesium ribbon at the tip of your crucible tong

and ignite it with a lighter or Bunsen burner flame. Collect the ashes on
a clean watch glass.

Result: The magnesium ribbons burned with a very smoky bright

flame and produced a white ash.
What substance reacted with magnesium ribbon during the burning process?

Oxygen gas, O2
Give the balanced chemical equation for the reaction.

Mg (s) + O2 (g) → MgO (s); (balanced)

B. Decomposition or Analysis

1. Open an ice cold carbonated drink without shaking then taste the
content. Next pour a small amount of the carbonated drink in a small
clean beaker and warm it over a moderate Bunsen flame. Taste the warm
soft drink.
Is there a difference in taste between the ice cold soft drink and the
warmed one? Yes there is.

BSCRIM & BSFS – Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Laboratory Manual – 2023 12

What made the difference? Explain. The difference was due to the
effect of heat. By heating the ice cold soda, the dissolved
CO2 content evaporated thus changing the taste of the soda.

What was the gas that evolved during the heating of the soft drink? CO2

Write the balanced chemical equation for the decomposition of Carbonic

Acid:

H2CO3 (l) → H2O (l) + CO2 (g) (balanced)

Crumple a small piece of paper, burn it using a lighter or match and

place it in an evaporating dish and then hold a clean and dry watch glass
over the burning paper using a crucible tong. Examine closely the watch
glass and observe what are deposited on it.

Results: The crumpled paper burned with a smoky bright

yellow flame and turned into black ashes after burning. There
was moisture as well as soot deposited on the bottom part of
the watch glass.
Name three substances obtained from the burning of paper.

Water, H2O (moisture), Carbon dioxide, CO2 (Soot),

Impure Carbon, C (ashes)

C. Single Replacement or Substitution

1. Put 1 small piece of Zinc metal in a test tube and add 3 ml of 6N Sulfuric
acid solution. Observe what happens.

Results: The zinc moss reacted with the Sulfuric acid by

producing bubbles and greyish precipitates

What gas was evolved? Hydrogen gas, H2

Give the balanced chemical equation for the reaction

Zn (s) + H2SO4 (l) → ZnSO4 (s) + H2 (g); (balanced)

2. Place 3 mL of Ferrous Nitrate, Fe(NO 3)2 solution in a clean and dry test
tube. Add a pinch of Aluminum fillings in the solution. Observe what
happens and record your results.

Result: The aluminum filling reacted with the Ferrous nitrate

solution and produced reddish precipitates which were
embedded on the surface of the aluminum fillings after a few
minutes.
Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction.

2Al (s) + 3Fe(NO3)2 (aq) → 3Fe (s) + 2Al(NO3)3 (aq); (balanced)

3. Filter the solution and set aside the residue. Place the filtrate in an
evaporating dish and evaporate to dryness. Compare the residue in the
evaporating dish with that of the residue on the filter paper.

Result: The residue is reddish is color while the filtrate was

colorless, but when evaporated to dryness, it produced a
greyish brown residue in the evaporating dish.

What substance is present in the residue? Ferrous, Fe+2

What compound is present in the filtrate? Aluminum Nitrate, Al(NO3)3

D. Double Replacement or Metathesis

1. Get 2 mL each of Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution and Ferric

Chloride, FeCl3. Mix the two solutions in a clean test tube and observe.

Result: When the sodium hydroxide solution reacted with the

ferric chloride solution a reddish brown precipitate was
produced in a light yellow solution.
Give the chemical equation for the reaction.

3NaOH (aq) + FeCl3 (aq) → Fe(OH)3 (s) + 3NaCl (aq) ; (balanced)

2. Get 2 mL each of Silver Nitrate (AgNO 3) solution and Sodium Chromate

(Na2CrO4) solution. Mix the two solutions in a clean and dry test tube and
observe.

Result: The colorless silver nitrate solution reacted with the

yellowish sodium chromate solution and formed bright yellow
precipitates in a light yellowish solution.
Give the chemical equation for the reaction:

2AgNO3 (aq) + Na2CrO4 (aq) → 2NaNO3 (aq) + Ag2CrO4 (s); (bal.)

3. Place 10 mL of filtered lime water in a 150 mL beaker. Put a straw or

polished glass tubing in the beaker with lime water then blow gently on
the upper end of the straw or glass tubing. Make sure that the lower end
of the straw or glass tubing is immersed in the lime water. Blow several
times until there is an observed change in the lime water.

Result: The clear limewater or Ca(OH)2 turned cloudy or turbid

after blowing in it for several times, and also produced white
precipitates.

What substance is responsible for the turbidity of the lime water?

The formation of Calcium Carbonate precipitates due to the

reaction of the exhaled CO2 in the limewater.
Give the chemical equation for the reaction:

Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) → CaCO3 (s) + H2O (l); (balanced)
