SUMMARY
Regularity and routine are of the utmost importance in early childhood, and most of all in it’s first
year of life with regard to sleep, food and excretion. Regular habit should be formed from the start.
Moreover, a child familiarity with it’s surrounding is very important to it’s mental development. It
teaches recognition avoid over strain and produces a feeling of safety. I have sometime thought that

desire of safety. We can cope with the affected, but if the law of nature were suddenly changed we
would perish. The infant because of it weakness, has a need of assurance and it will be happier if
everything that happens seems to happen according to variable inevitable laws so that they will be a
predictable. In later childhood, the love Of adventure develops but in the first year of life everything
usual tends to be alarming. Do not let the child feel fear if you can possible help it on to the child
through suggestion. Avoid everything that might produce excitement.
Do not minister to the child’s self importance by letting it see that you mind. It does not sleep, eat
or exercise as it should be. This applied not for the first year of life but also to subsequent years. Never
let the child that a necessary normal action such as eating, which ought to be pleasure, is sometime that
you want it to eat to please you, the child very quickly, perceives that it has acquire a new source of
power and excepts to be coaxed into actions which is ought not to perform spontaneously.

COMPREHENSION PASSAGE
It was the first night in June some years ago. I went to bed very early because I hoped to go to zoko
market which is very far from my village, luru, the next morning. Before long, I fell asleep. In my sleep I
had a frightening dream. I suddenly saw myself on a lonely road which looked like the one that led to
zoko market. I have not worked than 20 minute when two strange creatures came out of a near by
forest and they started chasing me. I became afraid and I started running. They gave me a hot chase and
were about catching me when I woke up. It looked so real that I was breathing helplessly that I decided
not to go to zoko market the next morning.

COMPREHENSION
It was a great joy when, after five girls, kola and his wife had a baby boy. The wife’s joy could not be
described. She smiled more often than before and minor illnesses that always disturbed her
disappeared. There were no more frequent headaches and rise in blood pressure. She truly came alive.
As was the custom, neighbors, friends and relations all kept suggesting names that the child should
bear. All names reminded one of the circumstances of his birth. Some called him Tanwa, meaning, the
long expected child; others named him okanlawon, meaning, the only boy among girls and Ayomide, my
joy has come.
The father was happy to have another wonderful gift from God. To him, the gender of a child did not
matter. Both male and female could be loving, successful and useful if they are cared for. He rejected
the view held by many people in the society.
About seventy or More years ago, it was right to say that a boy was important than a girl because
the society needed people with greater physical strength than others. They needed them to fight and
win wars. They were also useful on the farm to plant and produce enough food for the society. Since
women did not fight wars (except Queen Amina of Zaria) or have large farms, they were thought to be
less important than men. That was the time when a great warrior like sango was respected and honored
as hero.
Questions.
1. What was the likely cause of the wife’s headache and rise in blood pressure?
2. Who was happier when the baby was born?
3. What role did well wishers play when the child was born?
4. Mention two names suggested for the baby in the passage.
5. Give two reasons why people preferred boys to girls in the past.
