What is a habitat?

A habitat is the natural


home or environment of an
animal, plant or other
organisms.
Based on their habitats animals
are classified into …

● Terrestrial Animals
● Aquatic Animals
● Amphibians
● Arboreal Animals
● Aerial Animals
Terrestrial Animals/ Land

Animals
They live on land .
● They have legs or scales to
move around.
● They have fur/hair on their
bodies.
● They have lungs to breathe.
● They have well-
developed sense organs.

Examples: tiger, lion, elephant, dog, cat etc.


Terra means land
Aquatic
● Animals
They live in water .
● They use their fins to swim.
● Fishes breathe through gills by
extracting the oxygen that is
dissolved in water.
● Whales and dolphins have lungs for
breathing and they have to come to
the water surface to breathe in
oxygen.
● Jellyfish absorbs the oxygen in water
directly through their skin.
Examples : fish, sharks, jellyfish, whales,
octopus etc.
Amphibian ● They can live in water as well

s as on land .
● They live the first part of
their lives in the water and
later on land.
● They lay eggs.
● They have moist skin.
● They breathe through lungs
and their skin.

Eg: frogs, toads, salamanders


Arboreal
● Animals
They spend most of their time
on the trees.
● They have claws, strong arms
and legs to climb on trees.

Examples : monkeys, snakes,


sloths, koalas, lizards, squirrels
etc.
Aerial
Animals
● They spend most of their time in the
air.
● They use their wings to fly.
● They have 2 legs.
● They have light bodies with feathers.
● They have hollow and light bones.
● They have beaks instead of a mouth.

Examples: birds, insects, flying
