ENS 162 DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES PROBLEM SETS NO.

INSTRUCTIONS: Solve for the following problems in your big notebooks.

Show your complete solution including diagrams and drawings.

PROBLEMS:
1. A package is projected up a 15° incline at A with an initial
velocity of 8 m/s. Knowing that the coefficient of kinetic
friction between the package and the incline is 0.12, determine
(a) the maximum distance d that the package will move up the
incline, (b) the velocity of the package as it returns to its
original position.

2. Packages are thrown down an incline at A with a velocity of 1

m/s. The packages slide along the surface ABC to a conveyor belt
which moves with a velocity of 2 m/s. Knowing that μk = 0.25
between the packages and the surface ABC, determine the distance
d if the packages are to arrive at C with a velocity of 2 m/s.

3. A 1200-kg trailer is hitched to a 1400-kg car. The car and

trailer are traveling at 72 km/h when the driver applies the
brakes on both the car and the trailer. Knowing that the braking
forces exerted on the car and the trailer are 5000 N and 4000 N,
respectively, determine (a) the distance traveled by the car and
trailer before they come to a stop, (b) the horizontal component
of the force exerted by the trailer hitch on the car.

4. The 2-lb collar in the figure slides along the guide rod with
negligible friction. The free length of the spring attached to
the collar is L0 = 6 ft, and its stiffness is k = 8 lb/ft. If the
collar is moving down the rod with the speed vA = 12 ft/s when it
is at A, determine the speed of the collar at B.

5. The springs of stiffness k are designed to stop the 20-Mg

railroad car traveling at 8 km/h within 400 mm after impact. Find
the smallest value of k that will produce the desired result.

6. A crate of weight W is dragged across the floor from A to B by

the constant vertical force P acting at the end of the rope.
Calculate the work done on the crate by force P. Assume that the
crate does not lift off the floor. For the crate described,
determine the work done by the friction force if the kinetic
coefficient of friction between the crate and floor is µ.

7. The block of mass m = 12 kg is at rest

when the force F = 60cosπt N is
applied during the period 0 ≤ t ≤ 0.5
s. (a) Determine the power of F as a
function of t during this period. (b)
Find the maximum power and the time
when it occurs.

8. A pan of negligible mass is attached to two identical springs of

stiffness. If a 10-kg box is dropped from a height of 0.5 m above
the pan, determine the maximum vertical displacement d. Initially
each spring has a tension of 50 N.
