About the University

The Indira Gandhi National Open University, one of the largest open universities in the world,
was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985, to advance and disseminate learning and
knowledge by a diversity of means, including the use of information and communication
technology, to provide opportunities for higher education to a large segment of the population.
The University offers academic, professional, vocational, awareness generating and skill-
oriented programmes at the level of Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree,
and Doctoral Degree through its 21 Schools of Studies and a countrywide network of Regional
Centres and Learner Support Centres. These Programmes are offered through multiple
instructional packages with the convergence of different methodologies and technologies. The
University is making all efforts to take higher education to the doorsteps of the hitherto
unreached. Based on its contribution in Distance Education, it was conferred with Award of
Excellence by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Canada, in 1993.
The recent initiatives of the university to provide technology-enabled education within the
framework of blended learning includes SWAYAM based Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOCs), 24x7 SWAYAMPRABHA chennels, e-Gyankosh and IGNOU e-Content App for
digital study material.

School of Education (SOE)

Genesis
The School of Education is one of the first Schools of Study established in IGNOU in the year
1987. The School plays an important role in the University. The first programme of the School
was Diploma in Distance Education. The School then launched Diploma in Higher Education in
1992. It was later converted to Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education (PGDHE). At
present the School is offering 13 programmes.
The following four disciplines/areas are assigned to the SOE by the Academic Council of the
University.

▪ Education
▪ Distance Education
▪ Educational Technology
▪ Adult Education

Vision
The vision of the School is to provide multidisciplinary perspective while developing both
disciplinary and professional programmes in the area of Education and to develop a cadre of

professionally trained reflective teachers who are equipped with the relevant knowledge ,
skills, attitudes and values that will facilitate them to undertake various roles and
responsibilities in a multifaceted system of education in the country.

Mission
The mandate of the School of Education (SOE) is to plan, develop and launch academic
programmes in Education as a field of knowledge and an area of professional practice. The
functions of the SOE are, within the broad framework of the objectives of the IGNOU, to
undertake academic, research and extension activities related to theory and practice of education.
The SOE prepares specialists in educational discourses and knowledge generation. It develops
academic programmes for the professional development of teachers and educational managers at
different levels of education. It also functions as a centre for documentation of teacher education
materials in the form of print and non-print media and is engaged in the promotion of
technology-enabled learning.

The School has been undertaking mainly two types of activities:

Evaluation System

The School follows the following evaluation pattern:

▪ Self-evaluation exercises within each unit of study (non-credited)


▪ Continuous evaluation through assignments, extended contact programme (ECP),
Internships, school-based activities (SBA), workshop-based activities (WBA), projects
and dissertations.
▪ Term End Examinations.

Projects Undertaken by the School

The School undertakes projects from time to time for the Continuous Professional Development
of in-service teachers from various agencies. The projects are undertakes in a collaborative
mode.
Current Project:
▪ Professional Development Programme for 10,000 Teachers of Navodaya Vidyalaya
Samiti through ‘Certificate in Professional Development of Teachers (CPDT)
Programme’ has been launched during July 2022 through project mode.

Projects already accomplished by the School:

▪ Professional training programme for untrained teachers of Primary level through two-
year Diploma in Primary Education (DPE) Programme in the States of Chattisgarh,
Bihar, Jarkhand and Jammu & Kashmir.

▪ Professional training programme for untrained teachers of Elementary (Primary and


Upper Primary) level through two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EL.ED.)
Programme in the State of Tripura.

▪ Teacher Training Programme to train the untrained Elementary School Teachers (Classed
VI-VIII) of Tripura State through ‘Certificate in Elementary Teacher Education’ (CETE)
programme.

▪ Professional development programme for the teachers of Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti


(NVS) through a certificate programme of six months duration.

▪ An enrichment training programme of six months duration for the untrained teachers of
Bihar sponsored by the State for the Diploma in Primary Education (DPE) on the
recommendation of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Delhi.

▪ Professional training programme for untrained teachers of Elementary (Primary and


Upper Primary) level through two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EL.ED.)
Programme in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Sikkim; Uttarakhand.

▪ Professional development of the primary school teachers (Class I to V) of Kendriya


Vidyalayas through six months ‘Certificate Programme for Professional Development of
Primary Teachers’ (CPPDPT).

▪ Professional training programme for untrained teachers of Secondary level through two-
year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Programme in the State of Jammu & Kashmir.
