(i) The setup shown below is that of the reaction between metal nitride and water. Here
magnesium nitride was treated with warm water inside a round-bottomed flask. Pooja,
being curious, wanted to know about the nature of the substance left inside the round-
bottomed flask at the completion of the reaction. So she introduced a piece of red
litmus paper and a piece of blue litmus into the flask.

(i) (a) A boy has reported the radii of Cu, Cu+ and Cu2+ as 0.96A°, 1.22A° and 0.72A°
respectively. However, it has been noticed that he interchanged the values by
mistake. Assign correct values to different species.
(b) How does ionisation potential vary across the period represented by the elements
sodium to argon? [2]

(ii) Write equations for the reactions taking place at the cathode and the anode during the
electrolysis of:
(a) Acidified copper sulphate solution with platinum electrode.
(b) Acidulated water with inert electrode. [2]

(iii) What is isomerism? Give an example of a pair of chain isomers (showing their
structural formula). [3]

(iv) Calculate the molecular mass of a gas, 5.6 litres of which at STP weighs 8 gm. If

(iii) Solution X has a pH of 13, solution Y has a pH of 6 and solution Z has a pH of 2.


(a) Which solution will liberate ammonia from ammonium chloride on heating?
(b) Which solution is a strong acid? [2]

(iv) State the observation when ammonium hydroxide is added to copper sulphate
solution when the former is added to the latter in limited quantity and excess
quantity. [2]

(v) A gas when filled in a vessel weighs 2.5 gm. When hydrogen is filled in the same
vessel it weighs 0.30 g at the same temperature and pressure. Calculate the molecular
weight of the gas. [2]

Question 5
(i) The setup for the laboratory preparation of hydrogen chloride is diagrammatically
shown below. Hydrogen chloride gas is prepared here by the reaction between
sodium chloride and concentrated sulphuric acid. Anamika wanted to experiment
with the setup by using concentrated nitric acid instead of sulphuric acid, and
phosphorous pentoxide instead of concentrated sulphuric acid as the drying agent.
But in this way, she failed miserably.
