THE OFW EXPERIENCE ABROAD

Introduction

With the struggle of thousands of families in the Philippines financially, more and more Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) are establishing lives overseas. The decision to do work in another nation
is frequently act by another issue along the lines of monetary necessity, accessibility of work and
additionally a need to convey an improved life home. This report intends to share the insights of
an OFW interview. It is centered around their reasons for going overseas, and the share some of
the perspectives on life an work abroad and back here in the Philippines. This paper explores the
socio-economic impact of becoming an OFW largely through personal experiences and
perspectives from the interviewee.

Objectives

The main objectives of this study are;

• To comprehend the reasons, behind the individuals decision to seek employment overseas,
than remaining in the Philippines.
• Assess the regularity and content of interactions, between workers (OFWs) and their
families, in the Philippines.
• Investigating the experiences of individuals living and working abroad could be quite
insightful, for our research purposes.
• Exploring the thoughts and reflections of individuals upon their return, to the Philippines.
Findings

1.The interview uncovered a number of revelations, about the experiences of an Overseas Filipino
Worker (OFWs). Reasons, for opting to work ;

The individual shared that their decision to pursue employment overseas stemmed from the
challenges of securing work in the Philippines after completing high school education.Though
local job opportunities were available occasionally the respondent believed that the earnings would
not adequately cover the expenses, for their three children’s education and daily essentials.On the
contrary a job abroad promised a chance to earn an income of their familys well being and needs.

2. Building relationships with my family in the Philippines.

The interviewee stressed the importance of regular communication with their family, particularly
their children. As an Overseas Filipino Worker, consistent communication is essential to remain in
touch, monitor the well-being of family members, and guarantee that the children's needs,
especially their education, are being fulfilled. The interviewee confirmed that they make an effort
to check in with family members regularly.

3. International Residency

The interviewee has had mostly pleasant experiences while residing in a foreign land. The country
they call home is more secure than the Philippines, according to them, leading to an increased
feeling of safety and comfort. The interviewee's time spent living abroad has been noted for its
serenity and stability.

4. Experience of working Abroad

The overseas work experience of the respondent has been advantageous. According to the report,
their income was sufficient for their family and adequate. They were thankful for the opportunity
to transfer funds, securing their children's education and essential needs.
5. Observation upon returning to the Philippines

The respondent observed considerable developments, the most marked being the increase in the
cost of living. The rise in prices of goods left no doubt that living expenses had become
considerably higher. The respondent expressed concern over the decline in public safety and the
resulting sense of insecurity, as indicated by the frequent reports of violence and crime. The
respondent believed that the Philippines had become less welcoming and more threatening, posing
a particular concern for those unfamiliar with the region.

Discussion

The interview results shed light on the significant motivators and obstacles encountered by OFWs
in their roles. The decision to work abroad is frequently a financial necessity for Filipinos with
less education, as the Philippines presents limited prospects in this area. The costly living
conditions in the Philippines complicate matters for families in providing for their fundamental
needs, necessitating the need for higher earnings obtainable abroad. Maintaining contact with
family is an essential part of being an OFW . The physical space between us doesn't matter;
maintaining a close relationship with our family, particularly our children, is a priority. The
emotional bond acts as a comforting tool for the OFW, enabling them to feel engaged in their
children's experiences, despite being physically distant. The safety and stability of the host country
are key influences on the satisfaction and effectiveness of expatriates living and working abroad.
However, the experience of returning to the Philippines revealed a stark contrast in terms of
economic challenges and public safety, which may affect an OFW’s decision to stay permanently
abroad or return home.

Conclusions

The experiences of the interviewee mirror the usual difficulties experienced by a large number of
OFWs. The necessity to provide for family requirements and further education is a significant
influence in the decision to work overseas. The experiences of the interviewee underscore the
importance of staying connected with family while living abroad and the sense of security and
stability that can be gained through employment in a foreign country. The escalating cost of living
and heightened safety issues in the Philippines upon return serve as intricate challenges for OFWs
pondering a homecoming.
