Letter from Josh Cooper, President and CEO

of Baycrest Foundation
Welcome to the 2024 Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer’s in support of
Baycrest, the largest on-ice charitable hockey tournament in North America!
We are thrilled to be back together again for this incredible event.
It is predicted that more than 1 million Canadians will be living with
dementia by the year 2030. Baycrest continues to make great strides to
address this challenge by advancing critical research to prevent, detect
and treat dementia, and to create new gold standards in care for those
living with this diagnosis. And that’s why we’ve all come together — to help
raise critical funds to support Baycrest’s efforts to defeat dementia.
Since the Pro-Am first launched in 2005, more than $34 million has been
raised to support Baycrest’s groundbreaking research and advances in
treatment, giving hope to families and individuals in our community living
with dementia.
With the incredible support of Scotiabank, our captains, players, volunteers,
sponsors, community of donors, Olympians, and the NHL and Toronto Maple
Leafs Alumni, we are One Team vs. Alzheimer’s, working together
to defeat dementia and create a world where every older adult enjoys a life
of purpose, inspiration and fulfilment.
On behalf of the Baycrest Foundation and everyone we support, thank you
for your dedication to this important cause.
Here’s to a great Pro-Am, and we can’t wait to “Stick it to Alzheimer’s” with
all of you!

Josh Cooper

Scotiabank Pro-Am supports critical Alzheimer’s

research at Baycrest
Baycrest is a global leader in aging and brain health with a vision of a world
where, with your help, we can defeat dementia. Baycrest provides everyone
with the tools they need to make their later years the best years of their
lives. Through our work in research, innovation, care, and education, we
are working to defeat dementia and create a world where every older adult
enjoys a life of purpose, inspiration, and fulfillment.
For 18 years, sponsors, participants, and donors of the Scotiabank Pro-Am
for Alzheimer’s have actively invested in world-class Alzheimer’s research at
Baycrest. Funds continue to be needed to support research and innovation
that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of those with Alzheimer’s and
their loved ones. Currently, funds raised through the Pro-Am support five
leading researchers and their critical work.
• Dr. Nicole Anderson, the Associate Scientific Director of Baycrest’s
Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, is looking at
personalized prescriptions for brain health such as exercise, nutrition,
and social engagement interventions, that can help prevent Alzheimer’s
disease and related dementias.
• Dr. Jean Chen is developing non-invasive therapeutic tools that can be
used in clinic and at the patient’s home to maintain and improve brain
health.
• Dr. Howard Chertkow leads Baycrest’s Anne & Allan Bank Centre
for Clinical Research Trials (CCRT) and is the Scientific Director
of the Kimel Family Centre and the Canadian Consortium on
Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA). His work with the CCRT
attracts students working on new treatment elements and supports
researchers carrying out therapy studies, which means that Baycrest’s
patients can gain access to promising medications years before they
arrive at the pharmacy.
• Dr. Björn Herrmann is advancing our understanding of ways to support
older adults with hearing loss, an important dementia risk factor, to help
them stay socially engaged and protect their brain health as they age.
• Dr. Jennifer Ryan is developing eye-tracking tests that may be used
to assess brain health and to detect Alzheimer’s disease long before
symptoms emerge.

Letter from Pro-Am Co-Chairs

This is our sixth year as Co-Chairs of the Scotiabank Pro-Am for Alzheimer’s
in support of Baycrest, and we are ecstatic to see you all at this incredible
event! It’s a thrill to be able to play hockey alongside some of the most
notable and famous hockey alumni – all while supporting Baycrest’s critical
work to defeat dementia.
We would like to thank all the players, captains, coaches, volunteers, and
donors for getting behind this cause and helping Baycrest “Stick it to
Alzheimer’s.” You are raising crucial funds needed for ground-breaking
research into the prevention, detection, and treatment of dementia, and
giving hope to families and individuals in our community living with this
challenging condition.
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia affect not only those who are diagnosed
with it but also their families and loved ones. With more than 1 million
Canadians predicted to be living with dementia by 2030, it is more
important than ever to find ways to prevent, slow, or even cure this disease.
We have both lost loved ones to Alzheimer’s. We play in and co-chair the
Pro-Am in honour of our fathers, who both received unparalleled care at
Baycrest. We also do it for Joey’s mom, who is now living at Baycrest and
getting the best possible comfort and care. Our hope is that one day, other
families won’t know the heartache caused by this devastating disease —
and that’s why we are committed to helping Baycrest defeat dementia and
change the future of aging.

It’s a great privilege to be part of an event supporting a cause that means

so much to us. We are grateful to the NHL Alumni, to Canada’s Olympic
Women’s Hockey gold medalists, to all the amateur hockey greats, and to
our sponsors and donors for helping Baycrest defeat dementia, and create
a world where every older adult enjoys a life of purpose, inspiration
and fulfillment.

Thank you,

Joey Arfin & David Lewenberg
