DIFFERENTIATOR & HIGH PASS FILTER

Aim:-

To design and set up the RC differentiator and study its response to square wave input
To design and set up a high pass filter for a cut off frequency of 2 kHz. Plot the frequency
response curve and obtain the cut off frequency from the curve.
Apparatus/Tools/Equipment/Components:-
Resistor, Capacitor, Breadboard, Wires, CRO, Function generator
Principle:-
A differentiator as its name suggests ,does mathematical operation of input signal. The
time constant RC of the circuit is very small in comparison with the time period of the
input signal . For satisfactory integration RC≤0.0016T.The current through the capacitor
is C(dv/dt). Hence the output is proportional to the derivative of the input signal .
Vo= Resistance* Current= RC(dv/dt)
RC differentiator, the output is equal to the voltage across the resistor, that is: V OUT equals
VR. Output voltage is proportional the rate of change of input , If there is a sudden
change in input the maximum/minimum output voltage is observed . When the input
remains maximum for a period of time the output falls to zero. The peak of the output
gets doubled when the square wave is fed into the input instead of pulse input,

Filters are the networks designed to pass only certain desired frequency bands. Passive
high pass filter passes high frequency readily and attenuates low frequencies, since the
the reactance of the capacitor decreases with increasing frequency.
Gain of the circuit

Where fl is the lower cut off frequency given by the expression

fl=1/(2πRC)

A high pass filter is a filter which passes high frequency signals and blocks or impedes,
low frequency signals. At f=f l the gain is 1/√2, if the gain is expressed in dB scale gain
falls by 3 dB at f=fl

Procedure for Integrator : Wire the circuit and input the square wave voltage(5 V
peak to peak) and frequency 1kHz using function generator and observe input and output
at two channels of CRO for the following Conditions
(1)RC=T (ii)RC≤T (iii)RC≥T
Procedure for high pass filter:-
Wire the circuit and input the sine wave voltage(10 V peak to peak) using function
generator and observe input and output at two channels of CRO. Vary input frequency
from 100Hz to 1MHz and note down V0 . Plot the graph with log f along x-axis and gain
in dB along y-axis. Make a point on the graph at 3dB less than maximum gain and extend
to x-axis to make upper 3dB frequency.
