Local Literature
1. Philippine Nurses’ Association (PNA) Reports on Continuing Professional
Development (CPD)
The Philippine Nurses’ Association (PNA) has emphasized CPD as a critical
requirement for improving nurses' competencies. This focus aims to address
challenges such as high workloads and the need for better clinical skills, especially
in specialized areas like the ICU. Continuous learning is encouraged as a way to
keep pace with advances in healthcare and enhance job satisfaction and
confidence in clinical settings. The PNA’s stance aligns well with the current study
as it highlights the essential role of CPD in building both clinical competencies and
confidence among Filipino nurses, particularly those in demanding environments
like ICUs (PNA, 2021).
2. Impact of CPD Programs in Philippine Medical Centers
Studies from various medical centers in the Philippines demonstrate that CPD
programs have significantly improved nurses' confidence in practice, particularly in
critical care settings. These programs often cover advanced technical skills and
patient safety measures, which increase job satisfaction and encourage retention.
This local perspective reinforces the hypothesis that CPD improves clinical
competencies while influencing job satisfaction and professional confidence,
supporting the study’s aim to examine these mediating factors (Domingo, 2022).
Foreign Literature
1. United Kingdom’s Emphasis on CPD for ICU Nurses
In the UK, CPD for ICU nurses is highly prioritized to improve patient care quality
and nurse competencies. CPD activities have been shown to directly enhance
nurses’ technical abilities, teamwork, and adaptability in ICU settings. Studies
reveal that CPD participation correlates with higher job satisfaction and
confidence, particularly as nurses feel more prepared to meet the rigorous
demands of critical care. This relationship aligns with the current study by providing
evidence that CPD positively impacts ICU nurses’ confidence and job satisfaction,
both significant in their ability to deliver high-quality care (Glasper, 2018; NHS,
2019).
2. Systematic Review on CPD and Clinical Competency in ICU
A review published in the British Journal of Nursing examined factors influencing
nurses’ engagement with CPD activities, showing that CPD enhances clinical
competency and supports job satisfaction by equipping nurses with updated
knowledge and skills in the ICU environment. The study identified that CPD
engagement improves competency levels and encourages higher confidence, as
nurses are better prepared to handle complex cases in high-stress environments
like ICUs. This literature supports the study’s premise that CPD positively affects
ICU nurses' confidence and job satisfaction, enhancing their competency and
reducing job-related stress (Liberati et al., 2009)
