3. What do we learn about the relationship of Park So-nyo and her children
and husband?
- Park So-nyo was a very loving mother to her four children while her
children didn’t care much about their mother so is the grandchildren. Her
husband also was not very much active with her or in their married life
through the tone of the story.
What are the particular sources of tension or resentment among them?
- The loss of their mother sparked the arguments of the siblings because
everyone was blaming one another. As the arguments continued the
tension and resentment also continued to add between them.
4. Why is Chi-hon assigned to prepare the flyer’s caption? How does this
come in contrast to her line of work?
-Chi-hon was assigned to write or prepare the flyers because she was a
writer of books so she really didn’t know how to make a flyer for a missing
person.
6. Discuss the pain and regret Park So -nyo’ s family feels towards her.
- They were guilty of how they never paid more attention to her and how
they did not think of her health. They were pained by the fact that they
were not able to fulfill their responsibilities as her children. They also were
guilty because they knew that they may not be able to find their mother.
7. Do you think Park So-nyo’ s husband and children would have been able
to help her if they had paid her and her illness more attention?
-They were capable of helping her if they only gave priority to their mother
as she was ill. They would have helped her fix her health or at least made
her life better when she was ill. They would also have family pictures with her
smiling for the camera instead of their mother hiding away from the camera.
8. Did the loss of their mom bring positive things to the family? In what way?
- The loss of their mom may have brought the siblings back together but it
did not erase the fact that they all have seen faults in everyone which they
always argued because of their mistakes and differences.
9. What are the details and cultural references that make this story
particularly Korean? What elements make it universal?
- The names of the places where the story happened, and how the food at
celebrations like kimchi made the story a Korean story. The elements that
can be seen in the story that is universal is when children move out of there
parents home as they grew up. One of the elements also considered
universal but exempted to a few was how caring, thoughtful, and loving a
mother is. Parents are also somewhat not paid attention to as their children
grow older.
