Child Protection in Tribal Care

Safeguarding Innocence: Divi Prakriti Devi Dasi

The Vital Importance of Child Protection Office
Child Protection ISKCON Bureau

Child protection is not merely a legal obligation or a moral imperative;

it is the cornerstone of a society's future and a fundamental human
right. The importance of child protection cannot be overstated, as it
ensures the safety, well-being, and development of the most vulnerable
members of our communities.

First and foremost, child protection is essential for safeguarding

children from harm. Children are inherently dependent on adults for
care and protection, making them particularly vulnerable to abuse,
neglect, and exploitation. By implementing robust child protection
measures, including awareness campaigns, reporting mechanisms, and
support services, we create a shield against the myriad threats that
endanger their innocence.
Moreover, child protection is crucial for fostering healthy development. Childhood experiences
profoundly shape individuals' physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Exposure to
violence or neglect can have lasting detrimental effects, hindering a child's ability to thrive and
reach their full potential. By providing nurturing environments, positive role models, and access
to quality education and healthcare, we lay the foundation for a brighter future for our children
and our society as a whole.

Furthermore, child protection is instrumental in breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma

and inequality. Many adults who perpetrate harm against children were once victims
themselves, trapped in a cycle of abuse and neglect. By intervening early, offering support
services to at-risk families, and providing opportunities for healing and rehabilitation, we
disrupt this cycle and pave the way for a more equitable and compassionate society.

10
Child Protection in Tribal Care
Additionally, child protection is essential for
upholding children's rights. Every child has
the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing
environment, free from violence,
exploitation, and discrimination. Children
are not only the future of any society but
also deserve to be given dignity, respect,
and protection in the present.

Tribal schools play a pivotal role in nurturing

the young minds within indigenous
communities. They are not merely centers of
education but also sanctuaries of culture
and identity. In such settings, the need for
robust child protection measures is
paramount. These measures encompass
physical safety, emotional well-being, and
the preservation of cultural values.

Furthermore, child protection extends beyond the school gates. Collaborating with tribal
leaders, community elders, and local authorities is essential in creating a holistic support
network. Together, they can address systemic issues, advocate for children's rights, and enact
policies that prioritize their well-being.

In conclusion, the importance of childprotection cannot be overstated. It is only by standing

together and championing the rights of every child that we can create a world where
innocence is cherished, nurtured, and protected.

New School Building BVNS Bruhapara

In ITCT, our motto is We Care, and it is for all the tribal communities irrespective of their
religious belief or religion, no matter they belong to which tribe or from which part of our
country. The Bru community from the state of Mizoram has been a victim of communal
violence and has been living refugee life in the dormitories of Assam & Tripura. In 2022,
ITCT opened a pathshala in one such refugee dormitory in Haduklaupara Refugee Colony in
Ambassa under the Dhalai district. Around 450 refugee families live in this colony and
survive on ration provided by the state government through local administration.

The enthusiasm of the children of the refugees to come to school and study was so high that
ITCT constructed a separate school near the Haduklaupara Refugee Colony. This was also
possible because of one tribal family came forward and donated their land for the
construction of new school so that students could study and grow in their lives. The
construction of new school for the tribal community is well appreciated by the local
administration. Keeping in mind the socio-economic condition of these Bru refugees, ITCT
decided to waive off school fees. So it is the only school under ITCT banner where tribal
students can study free of cost. This school is a upper primary school which runs up to class
VII. Also, the increase in number of students every year shows the acceptance of the school
among the local tribals.

The literacy rate among the tribal communities is

still on the lower side compared to the other
nontribal communities due to various reasons.
The growth rate is not as impressive as we talk
about the GDP of India.
From the very beginning of ITCT’s formation, the trustees led by its Chairman Mahesh Chandra
Pattanayak and Secretary Sridhar Panigrahi emphasized on improving literacy among the rural
ST communities. And this led to the 2 models of literacy drive, one by establishing formal
school in rural tribal areas and the other through pathshala or informal school, which is quite
easy to set up and run as it requires 1 teacher and some 25-30 tribal students in a village.

The first model of running a school requires land, constructing school building, school furnitures
like being and tables and other basic infrastructure which are required to run a school and all
these reuires huge capital investment. In the last 8 years, ITCT has constructed 7 schools with
the first in Ajodhya hill top, Purulia and Anandabzar, North Tripura with the support of our
donors. Local Tribal Administrative Council donated the Langting school building in Dima
Hasao district of Assam. All these school are named ‘Bhaktvedanta National School’

Besides these 7 schools, ITCT also rebuilt 13 schools to conduct normal schooling, which was
handed over by the Education Ministry of the Government of Tripura, which were either closed
or on the brink of closure. Now these schools are also running successfully with an increase in
student strength every year.

The Pathshala model or informal school model is a place where children of a village going to
primary school gather to study. These pathshalas run under the name ‘Nimai’s Pathshala’.One

13
teacher is appointed to teach the tribal
children basic subjects of primary class like
English, maths, social studies, mother
tongue, and moral education. Depending
upon the students strengths, more
teachers are engaged. This also gives
local tribal youths part-time engagements.
As the quality of teaching in the majority
of the government schools in remote &
rural areas is very poor these pathshals or
informal schools are a beacon of hope for
the parents of the children.

The measure of success of any program is how much it empowered the people it helped.
This thought is uppermost in our minds . Education empowers and the tribal children of
today who will be the torch bearer of the changes in the tribal societies . Through education
tribals are made aware of the changes and challenges to their society . Women
empowerment is helping tribal women in taking better care of their families. ITCT is running
women tailoring centre and shal leave place making centre, which is helping the tribals to
earn a living.

Social Care
Tribals have historically shied away from joining
the mainstream society . Assimilating then to
the mainstream has been our aim .
We are assisting tribals in celebrating their
festivals and also inviting them to our festivals.
In remote areas, water and electricity have
been provided to the tribals . Sport festivals
have been organised under the banner of ITCT
Social CARE activities
where various tribal teams participated very
enthusiastically. Knowledge of government

DONORS TESTIMONIALS

Rochak R. Verma -
Corporate Strategy and
Business Excellence Officer,
ARASCO
While I've been associated with the India Tribal Care Trust for a
relatively short time, I've been immensely impressed with the
wide array of programs through which the Trust serves the tribal
communities across India. While most NGOs focus on material
wellbeing (food, water, clothing, shelter, etc) of their targeted
communities, the Trust additionally nurtures holistic wellbeing of
tribals through its educational, cultural, and spiritual
development programs. It's initiatives hence not only nourish the
body but also the soul. My best wishes to the entire team for all
their efforts and I remain committed to support them in their
endeavours.

Mr. Lakshminarayana
( Sr. Engineer, OQ Ammonia)
India Tribal Care dedication to serving humanity, especially
marginalized communities like tribal groups, deeply resonates
with us. The innocent smiles and hopeful eyes of the tribal
children at India Tribal Care touched our heart deeply,
inspiring us to donate. We believe in the power of education
to empower individuals and communities. India Tribal Care
focus on providing education to tribal children inspires us to
support their cause. Knowing that our small contribution can
bring happiness and positive change to their lives fills us with
joy and gratitude. We are grateful for the opportunity to make
a difference and support these wonderful children.
