The Living Organisms and Their Surroundings WS - 01

1. Read the text carefully and answer the questions:

There are some sea animals like squids and octopus, which do not have this streamlined shape. These animals have gills
to help them use oxygen dissolved in water. There are some sea animals like dolphins and whales. They come out to the
surface from time to time, to breathe in air. In terrestrial plants, roots normally play a very important role in the
absorption of nutrients and water from the soil. However, in aquatic plants, roots are much reduced in size and their main
function is to hold the plant in place.

i. Plants that live in ponds are

a) Pine, deodar
b) None of these
c) Hydrilla, lotus

c) Lake
d) Oceans
iii. The animals of aquatic habitat which have gills are
a) dolphins
b) octopus
c) sharks
d) fish
iv. ________ do not have streamlined body.

4. Assertion (A): Dessert rat to stay away from the intense heat during the day, they stay in burrows deep in the sand.
Reason (R): Desert animals like rats and snakes, which do not have long legs that a camel has.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true.
5. Match the following column I with column II:
Column I Column II
(a) long legs of the camel (i) helps to use oxygen stored in water

(b) gills (ii) keep the body away from the heat of the sand

(c) streamlined body shape (iii) helps fish to change direction

(d) flat fins and tail (iv) helps in moving inside the water

Solution

1. i. (c) Hydrilla, lotus

Explanation: Hydrilla, lotus
ii. (b) Ponds
Explanation: Ponds
iii. (d) fish
Explanation: fish
iv. 1. Octopus
v. (a) True
Explanation: True
2. (a) Cold and humid
Explanation: The two regions of the earth with extreme climatic conditions are the polar region and the tropical region.
The climate of tropical region is warm and humid. And the climate of polar region is cold and humid.
3. (d) Decomposer
Explanation: Bacteria and fungi are a biotic organisms that act as decomposer. Water, soil and air are abiotic
components. Decomposers are responsible for taking out the dead and dying organisms and produce nutrients to the soil.
4. (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Explanation: There are desert animals like rats and snakes, which do not have long legs that a camel has. To stay away
from the intense heat during the day, they stay in burrows deep in the sand. These animals come out only during
the night, when it is cooler
5. The correct order of match is given as (a) - (ii), (b) - (i), (c) - (iv), (d) - (iii).
6. In cold winter months, lakes and rivers freeze over forming ice. The fish and other forms of marine life survive by
moving into the regions below ice.
7. Oceans, ponds and lakes are aquatic habitats.

material for CBSE, NCERT, JEE (main), NEET-UG and NDA exams. Teachers can use Examin8 App to create similar
papers with their own name and logo.
8. Pond, forest, sea shore, crop field, grass land, mountain etc.
9. Take a test tube containing lime water. Bring it near your mouth and breathe out air into the test tube. During this lime
water turns milky. This proves that carbon dioxide is given out during respiration.

10. Camel is called as the ship of desert.

11. Features of desert plants that help them to survive there are:
*Lose very little water through transpiration.
* Leaves are either absent, very small or reduced to spines.
* stem is coved with thick waxy layer to retain water.
* Root grow very deep into the soil for absorbing water.
12. Some common characteristics of living things are listed below:
i) Growth
ii) Movement
iii) Feeding
iv) Responsiveness
v) Excretion
vi) Respiration
vii) Cellular structure
viii) Reproduction
ix) Adaptation
13. Aquatic plants need sunlight to perform photosynthesis, but fortunately sunlight can pass through the water easily
enough. This is why many aquatic plans may have stems that reach down hundreds of feet, but most of the plant floats
near the surface, where it can absorb the sunlight. Aquatic plants are also usually green like topside plants, to absorb the
most of the sunlight spectrum that enters the atmosphere.
14. Life cycle. Life cycle is the series of changes in the life of an organism including reproduction, all the living things have
a life cycle. All of them start their life from a single cell. The single cell or unicellular organisms, change into
multicellular organism. The multicellular organisms also start their life from a single cell.
Life span. All the living things start their life. These living things grow into adults, remain alive for a certain time and
finally die. The time period for which living things remain alive is called its life span. All the living things have a
definite life span.

15. Importance of habitat

a. Provide place where they can stay and rest.
b. Provide sufficient protection.
c. Provide place for breeding and rearing.
d. Makes available the required food.
